More than a year after her three sons were killed in violence, amid gunshots, over 4.19 kanals of panchayat land on June 19, 2014, Gurdeep Kaur (75) of Karia Pehalwan village, continues in trauma, with little hope of justice.
Kulbir Singh (50), Karnail Singh (49) and Gurmeet Singh (34) — her sons — were killed, while Jarmal Singh of the other party, a resident of the same village was injured.
An affidavit submitted by the family members, a day after the deaths, had alleged that the violence took place at the behest of BJP state president Kamal Sharma and his supporters Kikar Singh, Gurbhej Singh, Amarinder Singh Pothi, Jaspal Singh Jimmy and Jugraj Katora.
The document also claimed that panchayat officials had postponed vacating the panchayat land at the behest of BJP leaders on three occasions — a major reason for the tiff between the two parties. Records show that land was under the illegal possession of Balbir Singh and others which the victims’ group wanted to get vacated.
“My family has moved from pillar to post to seek justice against the murderers of my three sons but the kingpin Kikar Singh, a BJP leader, who was initially booked, besides 11 more people managed a clean chit from local police,” said Gurdeep Kaur. Later, the widows of her sons — Parwinder Kaur, Shavinder Kaur and Baljeet Kaur — were booked by police under Section 325 (assault) of the IPC allegedly under the pressure of Kikar Singh, mandal president of the BJP. “Everyone is our family, except children less an the age of 10 years, face false criminal cases by those who killed my uncles,” said Jasbir Singh, from the extended family of the victims.
“Besides Kikar, four other accused are roaming around freely, but my family members have been charged with charges of attempt to murder under political pressure,” Gurdeep Kaur alleged, adding that the charge was slapped 15 days ago.
“Had Kikar not got the political backing from Amarinder Singh alias Pothi, a close aide of state BJP chief Kamal Sharma, the dispute could never have happened,” claimed Karaj Singh, husband of Karia Pehalwan village sarpanch, who owes allegiance to SAD. “Pothi never allowed block development officer, Ferozepur, to let the panchayat take possession of land in question, a verdict given by the court a couple of years before the dispute,” alleged Karaj adding that repeated pleas to the party MP from Ferozepur Sher Singh Ghubaya went unheard.
Have nothing to do with it: Sharma
“The incident is unfortunate. The case, however, has been politically motivated. It was a dispute between the members of one family and the death took place in a cross-firing, I have nothing to do with the case,” said Kamal Sharma adding that the mandal president of BJP Kikar Singh tried to mediate in the case, but after three deaths, he also has been named an accused. Sharma claimed that an inquiry was held and Kikar Singh was absolved. Ferozepur DC DPS Kharbada termed it to be a case of family rivalry turning violent and leading to deaths.
