Upcoming Punjabi film Mitti Na Farol Jogiya decides to tackle the problems refugees faced after the Partition in 1947, particularly in the context of rehabilitation. Directed by Avtar Singh with Anurag Basu serving as a guest director, the film stars actors Kartar Cheema, Amann Grewal and the young Japtej Sandhu of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag fame in lead roles.
“Through this movie, we are trying to depict some of the emotions and conflict that people had to face after Partition. Also, we have made an effort to depict the relations between India and Pakistan in a positive light,” says director Avtar Singh, in Chandigarh on Monday, and adds, “We are not focusing on the year 1947 as such but the 1950s, the aftermath.”
Kartar Cheema, who is known for his ‘angry young man’ roles, says he had gotten highly involved with his character of Sucha Singh in the film. While before he could always play with his characters, knowing when to be in the zone, he says this was completely different from anything he has done before.
“I always feel a part of Sucha Singh in me, no matter what I am doing; I haven’t been able to completely shut myself off from this role,” admits Cheema.
Actress Amann Grewal plays a double role, portraying two Pakistani women from different time frames in the film. “It was a hard feat to pull off,” says she.
“I was very happy with the story and everyone was so nice to work with,” smiles the young Japtej.
Avtar Singh and Anurag Basu have both worked together in the past on various films with the most recent being Basu’s critically acclaimed Barfi!.
“I am a very restless listener to be honest, and then so many films have been made on Partition, but when Avtar narrated the story to me, I was completely engrossed and told him that this film is something that needs to be made,” says Basu.
