The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) on Friday staged protests across Tamil Nadu to demand concrete steps to prevent neighbouring Karnataka’s proposed Mekedatu reservoir project. Leading the demonstrations in Thanjavur, one of the state’s delta regions, party chief Edappadi K Palaniswami said they also sought waivers on crop loans withdrawn by the region’s farmers— one of the key election promises by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.

“Today, we are standing under the hot sun and staging this demonstration. But, the CM is keen on upgrading his office at the Secretariat,” he said.
Responding to EPS’ comments, state minister R Nirmal Kumar said the government was pursuing the matter in the Supreme Court. He added that “all legal action is being taken swiftly under the chief minister’s guidance.”
On June 19, the state assembly adopted a unanimous resolution against the proposed reservoir project in Karnataka.
