Chandigarh Police nab five proclaimed offenders

Continuing their crackdown on proclaimed offenders (POs), the Chandigarh Police have arrested five people, including a woman, who had been on the run in four different cases.

Among them, Sanju, alias Sanjay Singh, and Rakesh, both hailing from Uttarakhand, were wanted in a rioting case from January 19, 2013.

The case was registered at the Sector 36 police station on the complaint of one Varinder Singh of Mohali. Varinder had alleged that on the night of January 19, he and one of his friends went to a tavern in Sector 35. There they noticed that they were charged extra. When they complained to the manager, he and his workers attacked them.

The accused were arrested, but two of them, Sanju and Rakesh, jumped bail. Following their arrest, they were produced before a court and sent to judicial custody.

Another PO, Rahul of Bapu Dham, was booked on January 21, 2018, for drinking at a public place. He was booked on the complaint of constable Sandeep, who said Rahul was caught drinking liquor near Sukhna Lake. When he spotted the police, he consumed the whole bottle and smashed it on the road.

He was arrested, but did not appear before the court after getting bail and was declared PO on August 17, 2022.

Similarly, Suraj of EWS Colony, Dhanas, who was booked on March 12, 2017, for possessing illicit liquor, was declared a PO on November 14, 2022, after he jumped bail. He was caught with the liquor at a naka near 3BRD Gate.

The fifth absconder, identified as Saroj Bala of Rajpura, Patiala, was wanted in a cheque bounce case. She was declared a PO on August 18, 2019. She was produced before a court after her arrest and released on bail.
