After the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) lent its in-principle support to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Leader of Opposition (LoP) Partap Singh Bajwa and Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Thursday hit out at the AAP for backing the BJP-led Union Government’s agenda of polarisation ahead of the 2024 general elections.

The two Congress leaders said the UCC should never be forced on people because the Consitution of India honours the diversity and personal rights of people belonging to different faiths, religions, and ethnicities.

It would be the minority communities which would be at the receiving end if the UCC got implemented, they said in a statement.

Bajwa and Warring said that with the imposition of UCC, the harmonious and tranquil environment of the country could get upset, and the AAP will also be responsible for the consequences.

“With the preparation for the UCC, the BJP is attempting to divert the attention of the people from its failure on tackling the growing unemployment and inflation. BJP has also failed to restore peace in violence-hit Manipur, Bajwa said.

The Congress leaders asked the AAP why it should not be termed as a ‘B Team’ of the BJP when the AAP has been toeing the line of the party.

“In August 2019, the AAP extended its unconditional support to the Union government led by the BJP when Article 370 was revoked and the full state of Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated into two Union Territories. But now the ‘Broom Party’ (AAP) is crying foul on federalism,” they added.
