‘Encroachment’ on park by ex-LIT chairman: Green Tribunal directs DC, MC to take remedial action

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the deputy commissioner and municipal commissioner to take remedial action against alleged encroachment by a former Ludhiana Improvement Trust official at a park adjoining his house.
The NGT passed the order on a petition filed by council of engineers against alleged encroachment by former Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) chairman Raman Balasubramaniam.
In the orders dated March 11, the tribunal directed the DC and MC to take remedial action in the case as per norms.
The engineers’ body had filed a petition alleging that Balasubramaniam had intentionally and deliberately encroached at a public park in BRS Nagar by taking undue advantage of his post while he was serving as LIT chairman.
They accused Balasubramaniam of illegally opening a gate into the park from the rear side of his house. They also alleged that he parks his vehicles in the park and two generator sets have also been kept there.
However, Balasubramaniam refuted the allegations, saying that no encroachment has been done by him in the park. The cars which are parked in the green area do not belong to him and the generator sets are also owned by someone else, who has taken permission from the LIT for the same in the past.
Balasubramaniam resigned from the post of LIT chairman on Friday after Congress lost the assembly elections. He was nominated by Congress to the post
