Hunt on for woman who rammed car into ambulance in Chandigarh

One of the victims said a speeding Brezza car hit the ambulance from the side when they reached the Sector 36/37 light point in Chandigarh

Police are yet to arrest the female driver whose car had hit an ambulance on the Sector-36/37 light point in Chandigarh, leaving five persons injured. In his complaint, Mandeep Kumar hailing from Malerkotla told the police that on June 4, he was on his way to Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research from Nabha with a patient and three others when the mishap took place. He said that when they reached the Sector 36/37 light point, a speeding Brezza car hit the ambulance from the side. As a result of the collision, the ambulance van flipped thrice, leaving all five occupants, including the driver and patient injured. A case was registered at the Sector 36 police station.

UT mayor, councillors supervise public toilets cleanliness drive

Chandigarh Mayor Sarbjit Kaur on Monday launched the “Swachh Rakho, Swasth Raho” campaign in a bid to clean 305 public and community toilets by involving all councillors and citizens during the Environment Week, scheduled for June 5-11. The mayor launched the campaign at Shanti Nagar, Manimajra. Toilets at city markets and colonies were cleaned under the supervision of area councillors of the respective wards. MC commissioner Anindita Mitra, along with councillor Mahesh Inder Singh Siddhu, participated in the cleaning campaign at the public toilet in Sector 7.

Remote operation centre for US-based physics experiment set up at PU

Head of international cooperation, department of science and technology (DST), Government of India, SK Varshney inaugurated remote operation centre (ROC) at Panjab University (PU) for the particle physics NOvA experiment at Fermilab, USA.Varshney was accompanied by Gaurav Aggarwal, Scientist “F” at DST for the inauguration of the centre, which, the varsity on Monday said was a first-of-its-kind in India The inaugural ceremony took place in a hybrid mode. The chairperson of the department, members of experimental high energy physics group and various other dignitaries were present physically, whereas members from other institutes of Indian Institutes Fermilab Collaboration (IIFC) joined the event remotely.

5 arrested for gambling in Manimajra

Chandigarh Five persons were arrested on gambling charges with ₹14,350 cash, from two places in Manimajra on Sunday. The accused Satish, 22, of New Indira Colony, Manimajra, and Om Parkash, 38, of Mauli Jagran, were nabbed from behind the Vishvakarma Mandir, Motor Market. Police recovered ₹5,300 cash and playing cards from them. Deepak, 23, of Manimajra, Ravi, 37, of BDC, Sector-26, Chandigarh and Jitender, 30, of Dhanas, were caught near Shivalik Park, Manimajra. Police recovered ₹9,050 cash and playing cards from them. All were later let off on bail. HTC

Teen held for theft

Chandigarh A 19-year-old has been arrested for allegedly stealing the battery of an autorickshaw. The accused has been identified as Khusyad, 19, of Darua village. Complainant Vijay Partap Mishra of Darua village had told police that he had parked his autorickshaw near RR Hotel on June 4 when the battery was stolen. Initially, a case under Section 379 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code was registered while later, Section 411 (dishonestly receiving stolen property) was added. HTC

Murder convict held with weapons

Chandigarh Police on Monday arrested a man, convicted in a murder case, for allegedly possessing two illegal pistols and two live cartridges. The accused, Rajesh Kumar of Raipur Rani, was later released on bail. Police said he has been under a 20-year sentence in a murder case since 2016 and came out on bail in April this year.

One booked for blackmailing woman

Mohali After Panchkula police registered a case against a Panchkula resident for blackmailing a woman, the zero FIR has been sent to Zirakpur police station. The victim, a resident of Dhakoli, accused Bharat Bhushan Sharma of Sector 20 of stalking her, giving a drink laced with sedatives, taking lewd pictures and taking ₹40 lakh by blackmailing her. SHO Zirakpur, Deepinder Singh said police are verifying the details and will arrest the accused soon.

PU’s Urdu dept gets new chairperson

Chandigarh Ali Abbas took over as the chairperson of the Urdu department of the Panjab University (PU) on Monday. Earlier, the dean university instruction (DUI) had been officiating as the department’s chairperson for the last eight years. Abbas completed his masters in Urdu literature and PhD from Lucknow University.

Anti-tobacco campaign concludes

Chandigarh A month-long anti-tobacco awareness campaign organised by city-based non-profit organisation Sahayta Charitable Welfare Society concluded with an inter-school declamation contest on the harmful effects of tobacco , presided over by UT district education officer (DEO) Prabhjot Kaur, at St Stephens School, Sector 45.
