“An infiltration bid was foiled in Poonch district. In a joint operation by the Indian Army and police around 2am in Degwar Treva area along the LoC, two infiltrating terrorists were engaged by security forces. One terrorist fell down immediately while another tried to run back to LoC. He was engaged and hit. He was seen falling down near the LoC,” Jammu-based defence spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Suneel Bartwal said.

“He was a dreaded terrorist and a divisional commander of Hizbul Mujahideen(HM),” said Colonel Bartwal.

“The terrorist had crossed over to PoK in 1993, came back in 1996 and again returned to PoK in 1998,” the spokesperson said, adding “he masterminded number of attacks on security forces. As per police records, he had two wives and children, who are residents of Surankote in Poonch.”

Muneer Hussain was a close associate of Maulana Dawood Kashmir (TuJ), who is a close associate of Syed Salahuddin, the head of Hizbul Mujahideen,” he said.

The spokesperson said that recently a high level meeting of HM took place in Islamabad, which Muneer Hussain had attended.

“The agenda of the meeting was revival of HM in Rajouri and Poonch districts. Muneer Hussain, along with his body guard, was sent with this agenda. He was given a larger leadership role of terror outfits and told to revive terrorism in south of Pir Panjal,” he added.

“Muneer Hussain was the senior most leader of HM. He was the most dreaded terrorist killed in the last 10 years in Rajouri and Poonch region. It is evident that Pakistan was trying to send old terror veterans to J&K to motivate and recruit youth thus making desperate attempts to revive terrorism,” he added.

On Sunday, additional director general of police Mukesh Singh said 2-3 groups of terrorists are still active in Poonch and Rajouri districts and anti-insurgency operations are on to eliminate them.

“Though exact figures of terrorists who are active in Rajouri and Poonch region are available, it’s clear that they get support from Pakistan to vitiate peace and harmony in the region,” he said.

On Saturday, a terrorist was killed in Bariyama area of Khawas in Rajouri district. His body was recovered on Sunday morning. Special forces were brought in to aid the operation.

Army had recovered one AK series rifle, five magazines, four hand grenades and one bag of clothes with Pakistani markings from the site of encounter in Bariyama.
