Kapurthala police crack youth’s murder with duo’s arrest, 2 pistols recovered

Three days after two motorcycle-borne men allegedly shot dead a 24-year-old youth over personal rivalry in Kapurthala’s Bishanpur Jattan village on Tuesday night, police arrested the two accused on Friday.
Two illegal pistols, along with ammunition, was recovered from the duo, identified as Gurpreet Singh, alias Tanna, and Mandeep Singh, alias Saga, both residents of Bishanpur Jattan, said police.
Addressing a press conference, superintendent of police (Investigation) Harinder Singh Gill said on August 11, the accused allegedly opened fire at Lovepreet Singh, alias Lakha, who was travelling on a motorcycle with his brother Harshdeep Singh and friend Suraj.
Gill said the accused were riding a black Hero Splendor motorcycle. Lovepreet sustained fatal gunshot injuries and died on the spot, while Harshdeep was injured in the incident. The accused also allegedly snatched the mobile phones of the victims before fleeing the spot.
A case was subsequently registered at the Kotwali police station in Kapurthala under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act.
“Special police teams were constituted under the supervision of senior officers, including DSPs Sheetal Singh and Sukhpal Singh, to crack the case. Working on human and technical intelligence inputs, our teams succeeded in identifying and apprehending both accused,” he said.
The SP added that police recovered one China-made Norinco pistol, one PX5 Storm pistol, three magazines, three live rounds and three misfired rounds from the accused.
Gurpreet was already facing two criminal cases registered in Jalandhar Rural and was currently out on bail in both cases, he said. Mandeep has no previous criminal record.
Gill said further investigation was underway to ascertain the source of the recovered weapons and ammunition, and to establish whether the accused were connected with any other criminal activities or gang.
