According to family members, the man had left home early in the morning. “He told us he was going for yoga,” they said.

However, he allegedly jumped into the canal shortly afterwards.

Eyewitnesses said a migrant labourer present near the bridge attempted to rescue him by jumping into the canal, but the victim was swept away by the strong current.

Police launched a search operation in the canal and the body was recovered later in the day. They say proceedings under Section 194 of the BNSS (unnatural or suspicious deaths) have been initiated and further investigation is underway.

Family members said the deceased had been battling depression for several years and was undergoing treatment. He is survived by his wife and two young children.
