Benjamin road shopkeepers stage protest over alleged police misbehaviour in Ludhiana, seeking dismissal of the errant police personnel
Benjamin Road market association president Robin Sidana, along with a shopkeeper, blocked the road and staged a protest outside police station Division number 3 accusing police personnel of misbehaving with him.
Protestors sought dismissal of the errant police personnel and the station head officer (SHO) of the police station. They announced that they would continue the protest till the action against the accused.
Sidana said he made a complaint to all police officials including commissioner of police Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, deputy commissioner of police Simratpal Singh Dhindsa, additional deputy commissioner of police Parminder Singh Heer and assistant commissioner of police (ACP, central) Harsimrat Singh to no avail.
The situation turned tense after sub-inspector Akash Dutt came to pacify the protestors, who indulged in a verbal spat with him.
Detailing the alleged misbehaviour Sidana said, “I offered the SHO to bring dinner for him till he was not transferred from the city. On Saturday night, when I reached police station with the meal the police were torturing a man. A constable Kulvir Singh, who was known to me, asked me to wait for the SHO in the Munshi room. After some time Kulvir came to see me, but pushed me and asked to leave the police station.”
“When I objected to his behaviour, the constable removed his shirt and challenged me to fight. The SHO was also standing there but he did not react,” he added.
When contacted, the SHO refuted the allegation, saying he met Sidana for the second time and never asked him to bring food for him.
The SHO added that the police personnel have asked him to wait on Saturday night as he had come with no complaint. Reaffirming that no one has misbehaved with Sidana, he asked him to file a written complaint.
