Ludhiana: Jeweller suffers injuries in bid to stop theft

A man on a motorcycle allegedly dragged a jewellery shop owner for nearly 500 metres after the latter tried to stop him from fleeing with a silver bracelet stolen from the shop in Mohalla Kot Mangal Singh of Shimlapuri on Monday, leaving him seriously injured.

Eyewitnesses said the accused drove through the busy market area while dragging the injured shopkeeper for over 500 metres. (HT File)

The victim, Manoj, who runs a jewellery shop, said the accused entered his shop posing as a customer and asked to see a 32-gram silver bracelet. After examining two bracelets for several minutes, he pretended to receive a phone call and suddenly ran out with one of the items.

Manoj immediately chased the accused and managed to catch hold of him near his motorcycle parked outside. However, the accused allegedly sped away on the bike, dragging the shopkeeper along as he clung to the vehicle.

Manoj sustained multiple injuries and bruises in the incident. The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed in the area. Police from Division Number 6 station have launched an investigation.

Inspector Vijay Kumar said CCTV footage was being scanned to identify the accused and efforts were underway to arrest him.
