Ludhiana: Vet varsity to develop first-of-its-kind canine semen bank in country

Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) here has been awarded with a grant of ₹45 lakh by Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) under experiential learning project (ELP) for strengthening of canine semen cryopreservation and an endoscopic artificial insemination unit.
The grant is vested to the department of veterinary gynaecology and obstetrics which is also the centre for advanced faculty training (CAFT) recognised by ICAR in the field of animal reproduction.
Mrigank Honparkhe, principal scientist-cum-HOD and leader of the group for development of this unit informed that there is a lot of demand among pet owners and breeders for endoscopic artificial insemination in dogs. The department has already standardised the procedures of canine semen cryopreservation and artificial insemination. “This grant will enable us to develop a state of the art and first of its kind canine semen bank in the country, where semen of common and rare breeds can be preserved for future breeding purposes,” he said.

Sanjeev Kumar Uppal, dean, post-graduate studies and nodal officer of this project congratulated the team for this grant, which will benefit the veterinary students and canine practitioners to learn the techniques of semen cryopreservation and artificial insemination in dogs.
