No disruption to services, staff salaries at Miri Piri medical institute: Dhami
He assured the institute’s trustees, staff and local residents that medical services and employees’ salaries would not be affected because of the ongoing legal dispute over the institution’s management.
Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami on Saturday visited the Miri Piri Institute of Medical Sciences and Research at Shahabad Markanda.
He assured the institute’s trustees, staff and local residents that medical services and employees’ salaries would not be affected because of the ongoing legal dispute over the institution’s management.
Dhami said the SGPC would continue to discharge its responsibilities until a final judicial determination in the matter and ensure that patients continue to receive medical facilities without disruption.
He said the SGPC had already released ₹1.40 crore towards staff salaries and that the remaining salaries would also be released. He said the committee had constituted a separate trust to run the institute, with the committee’s president serving as its chairman.
He said the SGPC intends to develop the institute into a medical college and has created the necessary basic infrastructure for the proposed expansion.
The institute has been at the centre of a prolonged dispute between the SGPC and the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (HSGMC) over control and management of the institution.
On May 12, 2026, the Punjab and Haryana high court dismissed a petition filed by the Miri Piri Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Charitable Trust challenging the HSGMC’s move to constitute a medical board for the institution. The court held that although the institute had been constituted as a trust, the SGPC exercised pervasive control over it.
Dhami said the SGPC had respected court decisions and was pursuing the matter through the legal process. He said following the May 12 judgment, the SGPC had filed a letters patent appeal, and proceedings relating to the matter remained before the HC.
The dispute subsequently led to serious financial and operational difficulties at the institute.
On July 27, the HSGMC announced that it had taken over the possession of the institute after saying that the SGPC had not responded to its request to hand over the institution. HSGMC president Jagdish Singh Jhinda said the committee would deposit around ₹1.36 crore towards June salaries, while urging the SGPC to clear the dues for April and May, when the institute was still being managed through the SGPC-backed trust.
Dhami said his visit to the institute was not intended to claim possession but to reassure patients, employees and the people of Haryana that medical services and employees’ rights would be protected.
“As long as the final decision of the court is not pronounced, the SGPC will continue to fulfil its responsibilities as before,” Dhami said.
