Tardy police probes: Post Vij’s letter, DGP asks cops to prioritise investigations
The DGP said that officers should make random calls to complainants to inquire about the reasons for their dissatisfaction
: Haryana’s director general of police (DGP), Shatrujeet Kapur, on Tuesday urged police officers to promptly address public complaints and prioritise investigations, a day after home minister Anil Vij ordered suspension of 372 investigating officers for not disposing of first information reports (FIRs) in the last one year.
Kapur held a meeting with senior police officers and asked them to take proactive steps in handling complaints received in police stations.
He said that officers should make random calls to complainants to inquire about the reasons for their dissatisfaction. These calls will be used to assess the performance of police stations and officers, establishing a rating system, a police spokesperson said.
Home minister Vij on Monday had expressed dismay at the apathy, indifference and inefficiency of the cops in handling complaints and pursuing investigations. He had also written to the DGP in this regard.
“People come to me with complaints that they are not being heard, the police are irresponsive, cops show lackadaisical attitude in registering FIRs and then sit over the investigations,” Vij told HT.
The DGP said that senior officers should review calls made through the feedback cell, focusing on those dissatisfied with police actions. They should inquire about the reasons behind the dissatisfaction and ensure transparent work processes through call recording, he said.
