Delhi to be a hub of education for teachers, says Sisodia

While addressing the board members, Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia said the aim of the Delhi Teachers’ University was to create a world-class institution in the field of teacher education along the lines of premier technical institutions, the IITs, and the IIMs.

Deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia on Tuesday said the government plans to develop Delhi as a centre of world-class teacher education and it was with that aim that the Delhi Teachers’ University was created. Sisodia, who also helms the education department, was speaking at the first board of management meeting of the new varsity on Tuesday.

While addressing the board members, Sisodia said the aim of the Delhi Teachers’ University was to create a world-class institution in the field of teacher education along the lines of the country’s premier technical institutions, the IITs, and the country’s top management institutes, the IIMs.

He said the Delhi Teachers’ University would emerge as a brand for teacher education and allow India to be considered among the best in the world in the field of teacher education. “The teaching profession has become the last career resort for everyone today. The Delhi Teachers’ University will change that perspective, encourage the youth towards the teaching profession and produce hundreds of excellent teachers every session. Such excellent teachers will further mould the future of the country by delivering quality education to students,” said Sisodia.

The university will be offering seven courses after securing due approvals from statutory bodies. These seven courses include a four-year Integrated B.Ed Programme, two-year B.Ed Programme, two-year B.Ed Programme for Special Education, three-year Integrated B.Ed-M.Ed Programme, two-year MA Education Programme, one-year Certificate Programme (School Education), and one-year Certificate Programme (Higher Education).

“The university will collaborate with national and international organisations to provide world-class training to trainees as well as to exchange new ideas and practices. Along with these, teacher trainees will also get to learn about the international education system through exchange programmes and visits to other countries,” the government said in a statement on Tuesday.

During the board meeting, members also decided that courses offered at the Delhi Teachers’ University will focus on capacity building of trainees and fundamental and applied research in the field of education. “The trainees in the university will be exposed to excellent pedagogical practices by expert faculty,” the government said.
