Jitender Kumar: Contractual sanitation worker fighting Delhi’s MCD polls

Delhi MCD (Municipal Corporation of Delhi) elections will take place on December 4 with the counting of votes on December 7

A sanitation worker at the city’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Jitender Kumar is fighting the municipal elections from south Delhi’s Lado Sarai ward, saying he will work for the safety of sanitation workers in the national Capital and get them adequate compensation in case of accidents at work.

“This election is a fight for us to demand our rights. If elected to power, I will improve the livelihood of sanitation workers by providing them equal pay for equal work. I want to ensure that workers are provided adequate safety gear and equipment for their strenuous jobs,” Kumar said on his campaign pitch for the elections scheduled to be held on December 4.

Kumar is fighting the Delhi MCD elections as a candidate of the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation.

He is contesting the elections based on his demands for equal and timely pay for sanitation workers and better conditions for the frontline workers to do their jobs.

The manifesto of the CPI (ML) includes assurances regarding the regularisation of all contractual workers, rights to a place of residence, water supply and civic amenities.

Kumar said the election is a fight for the sanitation workers demanding their rights.

“This election is a fight for us to demand our rights. If elected to power, I will improve the livelihoods of sanitation workers by providing them equal pay for equal work. I would want to ensure that workers are provided with adequate safety gear and equipment for their strenuous jobs.”
