A 27-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday after a 19-year-old woman from his neighbourhood near east Delhi’s Mayur Vihar Phase 1 accused him of threatening her with an acid attack if she refused to accompany him to a New Year’s Eve party on Saturday. Police said they arrested the man from Trilokpuri while he was trying to flee the city.

Police said they collected footage of some CCTV cameras installed around the spot to establish the sequence of events.

The woman in her complaint alleged that around 3pm on Saturday, the man blocked her way, dragged her to his car, took out a small bottle from his pocket and said he would throw acid on her if she refused to celebrate New Year’s Eve with him. She said they were 200m away from their homes in Shashi Garden, and added that she managed to escape and call her family.

In a statement, deputy commissioner of police (east) Amrutha Guguloth said that on January 1, the woman filed a complaint at Pandav Nagar police station and alleged that Yadvender Yadav, who runs a grocery shop with his father in the neighbourhood, threatened to throw acid on her if she did not accompany him to a party and marry him. Police then registered a case against the man and began an investigation.

“Subsequently, police recorded the woman’s statement under Section 164 CrPC in front of a magistrate and Sections 354B (assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe) and 354D (stalking) were added to the first information report (FIR),” Guguloth said. HT has seen a copy of the FIR.

“No injury was caused to the woman in the incident,” Guguloth said, adding that the man went on the run after the case was registered. The two were in a relationship since 2017, but had broken up, the DCP said.

HT contacted the woman for her version, but she said she was with the police and could not talk.

Police, meanwhile, said they collected footage of some CCTV cameras installed around the spot to establish the sequence of events.

On Wednesday, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislator Saurabh Bhardwaj highlighted the incident on Twitter, targeting Delhi lieutenant governor (LG) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). “One more case - Attack on girl in broad daylight - What are BJP and L-G doing?,” Bhardwaj tweeted in Hindi. Thereafter, the east district police issued a statement, sharing details of the case.
