Sub-inspector, constable held for robbing U.P trader of ₹8 lakh

New Delhi: A sub-inspector and a constable were arrested by the Delhi Police on Monday for allegedly wrongfully confining and robbing a businessman of ₹8.40 lakh near Ajmal Khan Park in Karol Bagh last week, police said on Wednesday.

The two police personnel were suspended and a regular preliminary enquiry was initiated on March 25, officials said.

According to deputy commissioner or police (DCP) (central) Rohit Rajbir Singh, the arrested duo, SI Mahavir and constable Vicky, were posted at the Desh Bandhu Gupta (DBG) Road police station in central Delhi. A case of robbery and wrongful confinement was registered at the DBG police station under sections 309 and 127 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Police said, the businessman, Deepak Soni, from Jalaun, Uttar Pradesh, had come to Delhi on March 24. He carried ₹10 lakh in cash to buy jewellery to sell at his jewellery shop in Jalaun. He was in contact a person from Delhi who would help him buy the products .

Soni met the person in central Delhi. They were in a car near Ajmal Khan Park, when two police personnel came.

“In his complaint, Soni alleged the two police officials wrongfully confined him and took ₹8.40 lakh from him,” said DCP Singh.

The two police personnel were suspended and a regular preliminary enquiry was initiated on March 25, officials said.

“During the enquiry, the allegations were found to be true. A case was registered and the duo were arrested on Monday. They were produced before the concerned magistrate and sent to judicial custody,” added the DCP.

Police said that they were looking for the man who was with Soni to determine whether he was connected to the arrested duo.
