Woman booked for duping Rewari man of ₹1cr in land deal

A woman in Gurugram, India, has been booked for allegedly cheating a man out of ₹1 crore by promising to sell him a plot of land but selling it to someone else. The victim, a relative of a well-known politician, filed a complaint with the police. An FIR has been registered against the woman under sections 406 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code.

A woman was booked for allegedly taking ₹1 crore from a Rewari resident after promising to sell him a plot, but later selling the property to another individual, police said on Tuesday.

Police said that the victim, Sukhbir Singh (48), a resident of Budhpur in Rewari, entered into an agreement with a woman to purchase 2.64 acres of land in Pataudi.

They said Singh is a relative of a well known politician from Uttar Pradesh, who served as chief minister of that state as well as Union minister in his lifetime.

According to police, the deal was finalised for ₹1.85 crore with the woman, who lives in Sector-10A, Gurugram, and Singh paid her ₹1 crore in two instalments after signing an agreement on December 14, 2021.

Investigators said both parties agreed to execute registry on June 20, 2022. However, when Singh later approached the woman for the registry, she postponed it multiple times after giving him various excuses.

Police said Singh grew suspicious and started gathering information about the property.He got to know from the deed records at the tehsil office that it was already registered in the name of a person hailing from Pataudi.

Singh said he then he started pressuring the woman to return his money, but she kept ignoring him.

“Later,she threatened me over the phone that my entire family would be wiped out if I kept attempting to get the money back,” he claimed.

Investigators said the 2.64 acre plot, for which Singh had agreed to pay ₹1.85 crore, was shown as sold to another person for a mere ₹7.75 lakh on October 31 last year.

They said Singh, after exhausting all possible ways to get his money back, sent a complaint to the Haryana director general of police (DGP) on April 29 on which economic offences wing carried out an inquiry and found the complaint to be prima facie true. Finally, an FIR was registered against the woman under sections 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code at Pataudi police station on Monday.

Inspector Rakesh Kumar, station house officer of Pataudi, said, “EOW will take further action on the case.”
