21 criminals gunned down, ₹1,800 crore assets seized, demolished

The ADG said a total of 12,513 criminals/accused were arrested in 3,903 Gangster Act cases and 126 more in cases wherein the National Security Act (NSA) was invoked.

In the year ending March 15, 2023, the state police gunned down 21 criminals and injured 1,256 others during encounters.

Assets, with a combined worth of 1,849.28 crore, owned/illegally occupied by gangsters were seized, demolished or freed from their possession in the same period.

Speaking to media persons recently, additional director general (ADG) (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar said 3,052 criminals on whom rewards were announced were arrested during the period. Among them, 25,000 rewards were announced on 2,749 criminals, between 25,000 and 50,000 on 267 and over 50,000 on 36.

The ADG said a total of 12,513 criminals/accused were arrested in 3,903 Gangster Act cases and 126 more in cases wherein the National Security Act (NSA) was invoked.

Kumar added that the law acted against 354 gangsters and their gang members in 186 cases; while 94 of them were arrested, 61 were booked under the Goonda Act, 138 under the Gangster Act and the NSA was invoked against nine of them.

Meanwhile, 13 mafia leaders and their 21 aides were convicted and given prison terms of different lengths. Two were given the death penalty in the year ending March 15.

Crackdown on drugs and illicit liquor

The ADG said between January 1, 2022, and March 12, 2023, 13,787 cases related to the manufacture and supply of narcotics elements and psychotropic substances were lodged; contrabands worth 479.67 crore were seized in different parts of the state. As many as 310 cases under the Gangster Act were lodged against 1,448 people involved in peddling.

The ADG said a similar crackdown was launched on the manufacture and sale of illicit liquor during which at least 1,06,952 cases were lodged after the seizure of illicit liquor, and materials used in their manufacturing, worth 108.75 crore. The Gangster Act was invoked in 423 cases against 1377 persons.
