After the outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) and the death of over 100 pigs in Faizullahganj, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation has decided to construct a 9.45 km long master drain for clearing stormwater in the area. The area, which has been sans any drainage system, is prone to waterlogging every year, leading to the outbreak of many waterborne diseases and other epidemics.

Faizullahganj II ward corporator Jaglal Yadav and Faizullahganj 1 ward corporator Ranno Devi said, “There is no drainage in the entire Faizullaganj, which is located in a radius of about 8km between Sitapur Road and IIM Road. After rains, the stormwater remains stagnant in vacant plots throughout the year. Due to this, the outbreak of dengue, malaria and diarrhoea are reported every year.”
Jaglal Yadav said, “Municipal commissioner Inderjit Singh, who came for an inspection on Tuesday after the death of over 100 pigs, was stunned to see the plight of the area. He has directed the department of engineering to construct a drainage system here. The drainage system is slated to cost around ₹45 crore.”
A population of around 3 lakh would be benefited from the construction of the drainage.
Additional municipal commissioner Pankaj Singh said, “Depending on the availability of funds, the MC plans to construct a 9.45 km long drain to solve the problem of waterlogging in Faizullahganj. The drain will pass through the areas of IIM Road, Semra, Madhuban Vihar, Hariom Nagar, Chhoti Kakauli, Gaurbhith, Ghaila Road Petrol Pump, Hanumant Nagar II, Durgapuri, Daudnagar, Sath Fita Road, before culminating in river Gomti.”
The municipal commissioner Indrajeet Singh also visited the area to get a first-hand account of the problems in the area. “He visited the area to take stock of the situation,” said Narsingh Rao, a resident of Faizullahganj.
Rao said that the municipal commissioner visited all the areas, including Shyam Vihar Colony in Faizullaganj II ward, where the complaints of death of pigs and choked drains were the maximum.
“At many places, residents expressed their displeasure with the situation. During the inspection, city health officer Sunil Rawat, city engineer zone 3 Atul Mishra, zonal sanitary officer Ashish Vajpai along with representatives of Suez India Company, engaged in sewer cleaning, and contractors of the cleaning organisation and corporator Jaglal Yadav were present,” Rao added.
After the inspection, the municipal commissioner promised that the work on the drain would start soon. “The drain will end the problems of epidemics and water logging,” Singh said.
