Fresh Covid cases drop below 100 in UP after 74 days

Fresh Covid cases in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday fell below 100 for the first time this year with 90 people testing positive for the virus in the past 24 hours

Fresh Covid cases in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday fell below 100 for the first time this year with 90 people testing positive for the virus in the past 24 hours. Besides, 45 districts of the state reported zero fresh cases.

Uttar Pradesh had last reported below 100 fresh cases on December 28 last year when 80 people had tested positive for Sars-CoV-2 virus. On December 29, there were 118 new Covid cases. Since then, the number of daily new cases remained over 100 and during the third wave peak, UP had reported over 17,000 new cases in a day on January 17.

“There are 1401 active Covid cases in the state now,” said Amit Mohan Prasad, additional chief secretary, medical health, UP, in a press statement. “In all, 1,25,739 Covid samples were tested and 90 of them were found positive. The test positivity rate in the past 24 hours thus stood at 0.071%,” said Dr Abhishek Shukla, secretary general, Association of International Doctors.

Among new cases, Lucknow reported the highest 15 new cases followed by Gautam Buddh Nagar 14. Many other districts either reported fresh cases in single digit. “UP has successfully reduced new Covid cases and with just 1,401 active cases, we can hope the number will soon reach zero. But following Covid protocol will be of utmost importance even if there are no new cases,” said Dr Sandeep Kapoor, director, Healthcity hospital.

Of the total active cases, highest 244 are in Lucknow followed by 212 in Gorakhpur, 115 in Gautam Buddh Nagar and the remaining districts have below 100 active cases. In all, six districts Budaun, Balrampur, Hathras, Mahoba, Mirzapur and Shravasti have zero active Covid cases. On the vaccination front, Uttar Pradesh has till now administered 29,42,32,738 doses of Covid vaccine, including 16,53,18,548 first dose and 12,65,80,603 second dose.
