Deputy chief minister Brajesh Pathak on Wednesday held a meeting with officials of the traffic directorate and asked them to prepare an action plan for better traffic management in Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Ayodhya, Barabanki and Noida.

“A committee of senior officials of the traffic department is being formed. They would suggest areas where more traffic personnel are required and ones which don’t require as many cops. The presence of traffic cops in their designated areas would be ensured at all costs,” Pathak said after the meeting.

He also directed senior traffic department officials to ensure that a list of traffic cops posted across UP, especially on busy crossings, be sent to the police headquarters too.

“This will help in better coordination,” he added. The deputy CM also emphasised on vigil at specific points. “The traffic management needs to be at its optimum during school timings. Speed breakers should be installed at accident-prone spots. We don’t need as many traffic cops at places where an automated challan system is in place,” he said at the meeting.

Pathak stressed on ensuring compliance of traffic rules, making sure that traffic signals were functional and ordered crackdown on those violating speed limits.

This is the second time in three months that the government has ordered a review of the traffic management plan. In July, a similar initiative was taken with a meeting at the Lok Bhawan, the chief minister’s office, to streamline the traffic system.

On the instructions of the high court, a high-level committee too has been constituted under additional chief secretary, home, for the same purpose.
