Supply dept’s contractual worker beaten to death in UP’s Pratapgarh

A 30-year-old contractual computer operator with the food and civil supplies department was allegedly beaten to death by unidentified assailants while returning home in Lalganj area of Uttar Pradesh’s Pratapgarh on Thursday night, police said on Friday.
Saurabh alias Monu Vishwakarma, a resident of Manapur Sindhaur village, worked at the office of the supply inspector in Lalganj. Police said he had an old dispute with some people in the village.
According to police, Monu was returning home on his motorcycle when the assailants waylaid him near Gajadhar Inter College, Lakshmanpur, about five kilometres from his house. They allegedly attacked him with sticks and iron rods and fled after locals rushed to the spot on hearing his cries.
Villagers took the injured man to the medical college where he died during treatment. Following the incident, Leelapur station house officer Amala Singh Yadav conducted raids at suspected hideouts of the accused in the village but did not find them. Lalganj circle officer Rajiv Dwivedi also visited the spot and took stock of the situation.
Meanwhile, Monu’s family alleged negligence at the medical college hospital, claiming he was not treated for nearly 40 minutes after being brought there. ASP (West) Brijnandan Rai later reached the hospital and spoke to the family.
“An old rivalry is suspected to be behind the attack. The family alleged the assault was linked to an old dispute, which also resulted in an attack on their home about four months ago. A case has been registered against six named and half-a-dozen unidentified assailants on the complaint of the deceased’s father. Efforts are underway to arrest the accused,” Rai said. Vishwanathganj MLA Jeetlal Patel also reached the medical college hospital late on Thursday night and met the bereaved family.
