UP civic body election highlights: Nearly 50% voter turn out as polling ends, minor clashes reported in some districts

UP Municipal Election 2023 phase 2 highlights: Urban local body polls is being held for 7,006 posts in 370 ULBs, including 95 nagar palika parishads.

Voting for the second and final phase of the Uttar Pradesh urban local body elections was held on Thursday for 38 districts across 8 divisions: Aligarh, Ayodhya, Azamgarh, Bareilly, Basti, Chitrakoot, Kanpur and Mirzapur. In the first leg, the polling was conducted on May 4, and voters from 37 districts – UP has total 75 districts—across 9 divisions (Agra, Devipatan, Gorakhpur, Jhansi, Moradabad, Lucknow, Prayagraj, Saharanpur and Varanasi) exercised their right to vote.

The civic elections are considered a key political exercise to gauge the mood of urban voters ahead of the 2024 general elections.

The polling in the second phase will be held from 7 am to 5 pm, similar to the first. The counting of votes for both phases will be held on Saturday.

SP alleges voting malpractices

In a series of tweets, the main opposition Samajwadi Party accused members of the ruling party of indulging in fake voting in the Gursahaiganj polling booth of Kannauj.

It also claimed that the husband of an Independent nominee in Kanpur's Ghatampur was shot and that Dalits and OBCs were being denied voting rights.

A look at the early voters

Prominent among the early voters were state finance minister Suresh Khanna who exercised his franchise at a school located at Diwan Jograj, Cooperatives Minister JPS Rathore and PWD Minister Jitin Prasad at Sudama Prasad Vidyalaya in Shahjahanpur.

Speaker of the state Assembly Satish Mahana cast his vote in Kanpur and minister of state (independent charge) for environment, forest and climate change Arun Kumar in Bareilly.

Union minister and Apna Dal leader Anupriya Patel, who cast her vote in Mirzapur said that efforts were on to ensure the progress of the district.

An overview of party-wise candidature

BJP has fielded 10,758 candidates (out of whom 4,248 are women), the highest among all parties. The SP has fielded the second highest number of candidates – 5,231 (of whom 2,223 are women); followed by BSP with 3,787 (1,611 women) contestants. The Congress and the AAP have fielded 2,994 (1,395 women) and 2,447 (1,031 women) contestants, respectively.

According to SEC, more than 4 crore people (4,32,31,827) are eligible to participate as voters in these polls. This is a 22% rise from 2017, when 3,35,95,547 people were eligible. Uttar Pradesh has a population of more than 20 crore, and is thus the most populous country sub-division in the world.

Who were the star campaigners for BJP, SP?

The campaigning for the second phase of the polls saw UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath targeting the Samajwadi Party in different parts of the state, including Kanpur, Ayodhya and Aligarh.

Both the Deputy Chief Ministers, Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, Union minister Smriti Irani, UP BJP chief Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary also campaigned for the party candidates.

From the opposition camp, Mainpuri MP Dimple Yadav and senior party leader Shivpal Yadav extended a helping hand to SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, who had been campaigning for the party nominees.
