Last year, the APMC market had received a supply of around 15,000 boxes, but this year, it has increased by more than three times. Of the 50,000 boxes, around 47,500 boxes were from different parts of Maharashtra and the rest from the southern parts of India, traders said.
“Every year, Gudi Padwa marks the arrival of the season’s first biggest arrivals as many people start purchasing mangoes from the Maharashtrian new year. Usually every year, the ausspicious day of Gudi Padwa arrives in early April. This year, it has arrived around 15 days prior, and yet we got a good number of the produce as compared to the previous years. The main reason being the early flowering of the trees in the month of November. But this quantity of produce is expected to be here only for few days and in April, the arrivals are expected to go down and the rates are expected to go up,” said Sanjay Pansare, the APMC Fruit Market Director.

The prices of mangoes at the wholesale market are currently ₹1500 to ₹4500 per box. If the size of the fruit is big, each box contains around four to five dozens, and if the size is small, the boxes contain around eight to nine dozens. The prices during last year’s Gudi Padwa were in the range of ₹3500 to ₹6500. “Being an auspicious day, the mangoes that reached us were quite purchased quickly. On the day of Gudi Padwa, traditionally we also do a special pooja when the mango boxes arrive. Even as in April the supply is expected to go down, from May 5 onwards people would be able to get more mangoes and the rates too would go down by then,” one of the mango traders from APMC market said.
