BMC offers free tankers to areas worst hit by water cuts

The move comes as complaints of severe water shortages continue to pour in from several parts of the city following the 10% water cut imposed since May 15

MUMBAI: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will provide free tanker water particularly to residents in remote, high-altitude and other sensitive areas if the impact of the ongoing water cut exceeds 10%, additional municipal commissioner (projects) Abhijit Bangar said on Friday.

The move comes as complaints of severe water shortages continue to pour in from several parts of the city following the 10% water cut imposed since May 15.

Bangar said the civic body currently supplies around 150 tanker trips a day through its 33 filling points and has directed officials to ensure equitable water distribution. However, he urged residents to conserve water and reduce dependency on tankers, warning that Mumbai’s available water stock is expected to last only until August 20.

With the monsoon now expected to reach the city around June 20, senior civic officials reviewed the water situation on Friday and discussed contingency measures.

The civic body said the 10% water cut will continue until water levels in the reservoirs supplying Mumbai improve substantially.
