Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde along with other Shiv Sena party leaders and workers on Thursday broke into a celebration after the Supreme Court gave its verdict on last year’s political crisis in the state that had led to the collapse of the tripartite Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government following a rebellion by the Shinde faction. In a video shared by the news agency ANI, the leaders can be seen distributing sweets among each other outside Shinde's official residence Varsha Bungalow.

The top court said that it cannot disqualify the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government and rejected the submission to reinstate Uddhav Thackeray as chief minister because the latter had chosen to resign.

A five-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud also held that the then Speaker's decision to appoint Bharat Gogawale of the Shinde faction as the whip of the Shiv Sena in the Maharashtra Assembly was “contrary to law”. “The whip has to be appointed by a political party,” the court observed.

Meanwhile, after the verdict, Uddhav Thackeray asked Shinde to resign from the CM post on “moral grounds”. “People who left my party have no right to ask me questions. If this CM has any morality, he must resign as I did. They betrayed my party and the legacy of my father. I may have done wrong by resigning but I did it on moral grounds,” he said.

Responding to this, deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said that Thackeray has “no right to speak about morality as Sena won the assembly elections in alliance with BJP but then went with Congress.”
