Maharashtra sees 253 new Covid cases, 1 death; Mumbai logs 172 fresh infections

Maharashtra recorded 253 new Covid-19 cases on Saturday, up from 205 a day ago, pushing its cumulative infection tally to 7,879,054, a health department bulletin showed. There was one related fatality as well, as the cumulative toll due to the infection rose to 147,846, according to the bulletin.

This is for the third straight day that the state has seen at least 200 new Covid-19 cases; as many as 233 people had tested positive on Thursday. Also, there was no fresh fatality on Thursday and Friday.

Saturday’s bulletin, meanwhile, also reported that 136 more people recovered from the illness, taking the total number of recoveries to 7,729,931. This also means that the state’s total active caseload is at 1,277. Further, with 29,658 more samples tested, a total of 80,355,072 samples have been tested in Maharashtra till now.

Of the fresh infections, the state’s capital city, Mumbai, alone accounted for 172, which took its overall caseload to 1,059,684. However, as the metropolis saw no new death for a seventh consecutive day, its related toll remained at 19,563.

The lone death took place in Satara, in Pune division.

Overall, as per the data, Maharashtra’s cumulative recovery and fatality rate stand at 98.11% and 1.86%, respectively.

The Maharashtra government lifted all remaining Covid-19 restrictions, including the mask mandate, with effect from April 1. However, as daily cases began to gradually rise, chief minister Uddhav Thackeray advised people to begin wearing masks, and get vaccinated, to prevent curbs from being re-imposed.
