The accused, Saif Saiful Shaikh, fled to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar after firing at Sameer Asif Khan while he was entering an office in Dockyard Road. Shaikh subsequently fled to Bishnupur, his native place in West Bengal, from where the crime branch arrested him.

As reported by HT earlier, the victim, Sameer Khan, is the son of Asif Khan alias Asif Dadhi, who is said to have underworld connections and was earlier linked to underworld don Chhota Shakeel. Khan sustained a bullet injury to his right thigh but survived the attack.

During investigation, the police learnt that Shaikh, who lived in Byculla, and Sameer Khan were involved in a financial dispute. Shaikh was also connected to a local politician and wanted to establish his dominance in the area.

Police officers said Shaikh fired at Khan when the latter had gone to meet a hotelier friend near Dockyard railway station.
