Mumbai: A newborn baby girl was found abandoned on a footpath outside Victoria High School on Lady Jamshedji Road in Mahim on Sunday evening, after which the Mumbai Police registered a case and began searching for those responsible.

The infant was spotted by Omkar Hatalkar, a local resident who was walking his dog. He found the baby wrapped in cloth behind a tanker with no one nearby and alerted the police.

The baby was taken to Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital for medical care. Police said a case has been registered based on the complaint of constable Sujata Waghmare, attached to Mahim police station.

The case has been registered under Section 93 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with exposure and abandonment of a child under 12 years by a parent or guardian. Police are trying to trace the parents.
