The sports department of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has appointed 10 private coaches for the civic school students to help upgrade its training process of students to help them excel in sports. More coaches are expected to be appointed soon.

The decision has taken into account the often long process of recruitment in the civic body and to ensure the students do not lose out due to the bureaucratic delays and also get modern training in time. The first batch of the coaches have been provided by D-Mart to NMMC. It is reportedly planning to provide 10 more coaches.

The coaches have been training the students in Kabaddi, Kho-Kho and wrestling etc.

Navi Mumbai has received the district status for sports. The civic sports department organizes district level tournament every year. It comprises around 43 sports disciplines. Apart from the civic school students, those from private schools also participate in the tournament.

The sports department has found that despite being talented, the civic school students are often unable to compete on par with the private school students who get specialized training.

Said municipal commissioner Rajesh Narvekar, “To upgrade the sports quality in the civic schools, the sports department has taken several measures. We have appointed private coaches on a pilot basis. They have already started working with our students.”

He explained, “There are several talented sports persons amongst our civic school students. It is important that they get the right support and guidance. There are some technical reasons for the absence of special coaching in the schools.”

Informed the commissioner, “We do not want the students to suffer due to it and hence this pilot project has been started. It is working well in the initial phase and if it works out fine, we shall look into increasing the number of coaches.”
