Second merit list brings relief to students with moderate scores

Some colleges in Mumbai have adjusted their cut-offs in the second merit list for admissions to accommodate students with moderate scores.

Mumbai: In a big relief to students, who have scored between 85% and 90% marks, some colleges have adjusted their cut-offs in the second merit list for admissions to first-year degree colleges to accommodate those with moderate scores.

However, some colleges continue to maintain their cutoffs. The response to the second merit list, released on Tuesday, among city colleges has been mixed with students anticipating additional options in the upcoming merit lists.

The science stream cut-off is significantly deeper in some colleges. Hinduja College’s first list had ended at 82 marks in mathematics for the BSc IT course, which has dipped to 69 marks. In Ruia College, the BSc cutoff has dipped by 22 percentage points as compared to the first merit list.

Following the announcement of the first merit list, which featured high cut-offs, concerns were raised regarding the challenges faced by average scorers in securing admissions.

Shobna Vasudevan, principal of R A Podar College, said, “The actual cut-offs are slightly lower in commerce and professional courses. The trend appears to be consistent. The third merit list may bring further relief to students.”

She added, “Students’ perspectives have also evolved. There is no longer a heavy reliance on a few popular courses. A wide range of courses is now available, and students are exploring different options.”

Madhav Rajwade, principal of Sathye College, said, “We witness less applications as compared to last year in the science stream, which led to the dip in the merit list of basic sciences. But we are still hoping for a good turnout for professional courses in science.”
