Video: Newborn penguin triplets now star attraction of Mumbai's Byculla zoo

Also known locally as Mumbai Zoo and Veermata Jijabai Bhosle Udyan Zoo, the zoological garden recently completed its 160 years of existence on November 19. To mark the occasion, an online ticketing system was introduced for visitors and now they can book tickets online as well as at the park.

Newborn penguin triplets at Mumbai's Byculla zoo have attracted a record-breaking number of visitors in the last few weeks. "Recently, a penguin gave birth to two male (cock) and one female (hen) chicks. The newborns have been named Alexa (hen), Flash (cock), and Bingo (cock). People are very excited to see them" Dr. Abhishek Satam, biologist and the Public Relations Officer of Byculla, was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Dr Satam said around Diwali, the zoo saw its highest-ever visitor count of 31,000 in a single day. The steady uptick in footfall is also responsible for good revenue for the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation).

As most of the visitors are seen flocking around the newborn penguins, they are being monitored round the clock. "We are taking care of all the requirements to ensure the safekeeping of the penguins, especially the newborns. They are given food three times a day and regular filtration of air and water is also being taken care of" said the PRO to ANI.

He also said the birth of these chicks is a good sign as it suggests an increase in the number of Humboldt penguins at the zoo.
