IIT-K’s Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology: After ₹100 Cr donation, alumnus commits another ₹300 Cr

Co-founder of IndiGo airlines and an alumni of Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, Rakesh Gangwal will contribute ₹300 crore to the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology at IITK, supporting medical education, research, clinical innovation and MedTech.
This follows his earlier ₹100 crore contribution in 2022 which supported the institute’s plans to establish a medical school on campus, taking his cumulative contribution towards the Gangwal School to ₹400 crore. IIT-K extended very special thanks to Gangwal (BT/ME/1975) for the philanthropic contribution toward his alma mater.
Prof Manindra Agarwal, director of IIT Kanpur said, “He has contributed ₹100 crore and has pledged to donate another ₹300 crore within a few months. It is the highest ever contribution by an alumni in the history of IIT-K. It will be one of the highest ever contributions by an alumni to an alma mater in Indian academia.”
With this commitment, Gangwal will provide matching grants against contributions from other supporters, of up to ₹300 crore, towards the development of the School, the institute said in a press release.
The initiative aims to encourage broader support from alumni, philanthropists, and other well-wishers for IIT Kanpur’s vision of advancing medical education, research, clinical innovation, and MedTech ambitions.
The School’s development plans also include a 500-bed super-speciality hospital on the IIT Kanpur campus, along with a proposed 200-bed cancer care research centre. The facilities are envisioned to support medical education, clinical research and healthcare delivery, while creating opportunities for doctors, researchers, engineers and technology experts to work together on emerging healthcare challenges.

This additional contribution of ₹300 crore by Gangwal will help us bring this vision into reality sooner. This support reinforces Gangwal’s commitment and trust in the Institute.
