Tigress found dead in Uttarakhand’s Nainital district: Official

The carcass of an eight-year-old tigress was found in Fatehpur forest range of Ramnagar forest division in Nainital district, officials said.

KR Arya, range officer in Ramnagar forest division said, “Forest patrolling staff spotted the carcass at reserve forests near Paniyali village on Sunday evening”.
“The carcass of the tigress is likely to be two or three days old. Injury marks were found on its body. So, it seems, the tigress likely died due to infighting with another big cat. The actual cause of death will be ascertained after the post-mortem report is received,” he said.
“After conducting its post-mortem, the tigress was cremated and its viscera samples were sent to IVRI Bareilly for tests.”
This is the third tiger death in Corbett landscape in the last one month.
According to All India Tiger Estimation Report 2018 released in 2020, there are 442 tigers in Uttarakhand.
The tiger population in the Himalayan state has risen from 178 in 2006, 227 in 2010, 340 (including 215 in Corbett) in 2014 and 442 (including 231 to 266 tigers in Corbett) in 2018.
Corbett Tiger Reserve (CTR) reported the highest tiger density among India’s 50 reserves, with a density of 14 tigers per 100 sq kms, followed by Kaziranga, Nagarhole and Orang tiger reserves.
