Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ravi Shankar Prasad on Tuesday lashed out at Janata Dal (United) leader Nitish Kumar for breaking ties with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and joining hands with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) to form a new government in Bihar.

Addressing a press conference, Prasad, a Lok Sabha MP and former Union minister, said, “Nitish Kumar left us and said that the BJP was trying to destroy his party. The BJP made him a Union minister several times. He was also made a chief minister. Why did he rethink his decision on alliance with RJD in 2015 and come to the BJP in 2017?”

Prasad also recalled how Kumar joined hands with the BJP when the latter was probing the fodder scam against RJD patriarch Lalu Yadav. “You had left Lalu Ji when we were fighting the fodder scam. You had formed the Samata Party.”

"Why did you say in 2017 that I am very uncomfortable because Tejashwi Yadav was unable to give an answer to the serious corruption allegations against him," Prasad said.

Stating that JDU won the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Prasad said the tally of JD(U) MPs also increased to 16.

“You (Nitish Kumar) got 43 seats in the 2020 Assembly Bihar assembly polls, BJP's seats were twice as yours, yet there was no discussion and you were made the chief minister,” the senior BJP said during the press briefing.

“How can you say that the BJP tried to undermine you? Bihar's public tried to weaken you but Prime Minister Modi made you the chief minister,” Prasad said.

BJP MP and former Bihar deputy CM Sushil Modi said it is a blatant lie that the BJP made RCP Singh Union minister without Kumar's consent (a JD(U) allegation) and wanted to break his party.

"He (Nitish Kumar) won't get the respect from the RJD that he got while being with the BJP. We made him CM despite having more seats and never tried to break his party. We broke only those who betrayed us. In Maharashtra, Shiv Sena betrayed us and faced consequences," Modi was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Earlier, Bihar BJP president Sanjay Jaiswal said Kumar's decision to join hands with the RJD was a betrayal of Bihar's people and the saffron party.

Kumar submitted his resignation as chief minister of the NDA government in Bihar earlier on Tuesday and submitted a support letter of 160 lawmakers to stake the claim to form the government with the RJD led-Mahagathbandhan. He will take oath as the state's CM for the eighth time at 2pm on Wednesday.
