SPPU senate polls: Vidyapeeth Vikas Manch wins 7 seats
Vidyapeeth Vikas Manch panel, backed by BJP, wins seven seats of SPPU management council senate after the first round of poll results was declared on Tuesday
The Vidyapeeth Vikas Manch panel, backed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has won seven seats of the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) management council senate after the first round of poll results was declared on Tuesday.
Counting for the second round of polls for rest of the three members, in open category, was underway till Tuesday evening.
Of the seven winning candidates, two are from the open category, one woman candidate and other five from reserved categories.
According to the information given by SPPU, the counting of votes for polls held on Sunday started at 8.30 am on Tuesday.
In the Scheduled Castes (SC) category Rahul Shivaji Pakhare won by 13,512 votes, in Scheduled Tribes (ST) category Ganpat Popat Nangare won by 13,995 votes, Vijay Nivrutti Sonawane won by 14,101 votes in Nomadic Tribes (NT) category, Sachin Shivaji Gorde by 13,342 in Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. Bhagyashree Milind Manthalkar won by 15,649 votes in the women reserved category and Prasenjit Fadnavis and Sagar Vaidya won in the open category.
The winning candidates from Vidyapeeth Vikas Manch panel are supported by the BJP and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
For the elections, 88,900 voters had registered of which 23,866 voted today, including 16,601 males and 7,265 females. The voting was held on November 20 at 71 centers across Pune, Nashik and Ahmednagar districts.
A total of 26.85 per cent voting was done by registered voters. Vidyapeeth Vikas Manch panel and another panel supported by the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) were main contenders.
Rahul Pakhare (30), one of the youngest winning candidates, said, “I come from a very poor family and pursued engineering studies while take up a job. I want to work for SPPU students and put forth their issues before the varsity authorities, besides helping them get better job opportunities by connecting with industries.”
