On October 9, 2019, the trial court had convicted the three-term MLA from Baghmara and four others in the case and sentenced them to 18 months of imprisonment.
“I have repeatedly said I have been framed in 4-5 cases and demanded CBI probe in all these cases. I am surrendering today despite being unwell due to an ailment for past 10 years. I have full faith in judiciary and I will get justice,” Mahto said before being sent to jail.
On May 12, 2013. Mahto allegedly freed one of his aides, Rajesh Gupta, forcibly from police custody from Barora police station, besides attacking the policemen and tearing their uniform.
The subdivisional court had convicted Mahto and others in the case in 2019. The special MP/MLA court had, on August 22, 2022, upheld the conviction after which Mahto challenged the order in Jharkhand High Court.
The HC, on December 12, 2022, refused to provide relief and had directed the BJP leader to surrender before Dhanbad court before January 12, 2023, and file a revision petition later.
