In a fit of rage, the woman, identified as Anjana, went outside the room and returned after 10 minutes with a rope. She then allegedly strangled her husband Atul Singhal, 40, who was sitting on a chair. Singhal tried to save himself, but Anjana overpowered him, officials said.

Police said Singhal, who owned a footwear shop in Sahibabad, fell to the ground and stopped moving. Anjana thought he was unconscious and cried for help. A neighbour came to her aid and took Singhal to a hospital in Badalpur.

However, the doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. Anjana was asked about the incident, but she unable to speak.

The body was sent for a postmortem examination and Singhal’s brother Anshul Singhal filed a complaint at Badalpur police station.

Police said in the complaint, Anshul alleged that his brother was murdered by Anjana. Police started investigations and questioned her on Thursday. Station house officer of Badalpur police station, Anand Dev Mishra, said, “Anjana told us that she had found her husband sleeping and he did not respond to her calls. She maintained this statement. Meanwhile, we got the postmortem reports that confirmed his death due to strangulation. After the reports arrived, she confessed to having strangled him.”

During questioning, Anjana told police that her husband suspected her of having an affair. Every morning, he would check her phone and then beat her up. Anjana, who hails from Sikkim, married Singhal 12 years ago and was not allowed to meet her parents.
