Former Indian captain, Ajit Wadekar passed away on Wednesday in Mumbai. Wadekar, who famously led India to a series win in England and West Indies, was battling a prolonged illness and breathed his last at Mumbai’s Jaslok Hospital. He is survived by his wife Rekha, two sons and a daughter.

Wadekar is regarded as one the finest leaders in Indian cricket who, despite a short playing career, gave India several moments to cherish. He played 37 Tests and two one-day internationals and scored 2,113 runs at an average of 31.07 in Tests which included one century and 14 half-centuries.

He was the team manager back when Mohammed Azharuddin was the captain and went on to become the Chairman of Selectors.

The news of his passing away was met with an outpour of emotions as former and current cricketers took to Twitter to pay their tributes.

President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi too expressed their condolences.
