Day 5Session 2
South Africa beat Australia by 176 runs

Commentary

2:00 PM IST That's a wrap - Temba Bavuma collects the trophy and joins his teammates for the celebrations. With Table Mountain providing a stunning backdrop, the Proteas soak in the moment, and rightly so. They showed tremendous character throughout the series, repeatedly fighting their way back from difficult situations to emerge victorious. With that, Australia's tour of South Africa comes to an end, and they head home empty-handed, having also lost the ODI series. Up next for the Aussies, they welcome their old rivals England for three ODIs and five T20Is, with the ODI leg starting on November 13. As for South Africa, they will prepare to host Bangladesh for an all-format series, starting with the first Test on November 15. For now, you can switch tabs and follow the action from the Tri-series final between Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Cheers!
1:52 PM IST The skipper of South Africa - Temba Bavuma acknowledges the Newlands faithful for their support throughout the five days, adding that they brought their energy to the game. Says the team wanted to carry forward the momentum from the previous day, with their conversations centred around the character of the side. Credits Rickelton and Mulder for putting South Africa in a good position, while highlighting Rabada for getting things going on the final morning. Adds that the team managed to maintain a tight grip on the game thereafter. He says the bowling attack has been the backbone of the team and a key reason behind their success. Temba believes they have the personnel to deliver in all conditions. Shares that he was disappointed with how Harmer went in Gqeberha, but adds that he is a fighter. He describes it as an enthralling 15 days of cricket, with two quality sides coming up against each other and exploiting each other's weaknesses. Admits that there were times when they, as a side, were in awe of the Australians. Adds that his side tends to play better when they are behind in a game, although he is unsure whether that is a good or bad thing. On reaching the top of the rankings, he calls it exceptional and says it has been part of the team's ambition. He ranks this win among the best of his career, saying that every opportunity to come up against Australia is one to savour. Admits he hasn't been involved in a better series and feels the team has made positive strides towards where they want to be.
2:03 PM IST The captain of Australia - Pat Cummins admits the match ebbed and flowed throughout. He highlights that they did well with the ball on the first day, picking up all ten wickets and giving themselves a good chance. He admits it was tough work out there yesterday, and that a couple of partnerships South Africa put on made the chase a difficult task today. Cummins says Australia have done it really well over the last couple of years, and that bringing someone like Josh Inglis in was quite seamless. He notes that the trend of the game was that once a batter got set, there were runs to be scored. He believes Australia are a really good side, but says tough opponents away from home are always very difficult. He feels they were good enough to win, but acknowledges they were not. Mentions that he is relatively happy overall, adding that it comes down to the little moments. He wishes they had taken those moments - a catch going to hand, for instance - and says South Africa were better than them in those moments.
1:46 PM IST PLAYER OF THE SERIES - For scoring 198 runs, including two half-centuries, and taking 13 wickets, Marco Jansen wins the award. Jansen describes the series as very intense, with plenty of pressure and a lot of ebbs and flows. Mentions that the series has taken a lot out of him, but he is very proud of how the boys came through some tough situations. Marco says that every ground had a different aspect, and the team had to adapt accordingly. Assessing the conditions at each venue and coming up with a game plan was key, and he feels every player adapted really well. Believes that seeing Kagiso Rabada run in and do his thing, and Simon Harmer turn the ball square, puts a good kind of pressure on the opposition. He is very happy to see the hard work he has been putting in pay off. For him, it is all about putting the team in a winning position. If the team wins and he contributes to that, he is a happy man.
2:04 PM IST PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Simon Harmer has been given the accolade for his match tally of 10 wickets, 4 in the first innings and 6 in the second, to clinch the series. Harmer says it was simply about handling the expectations and, as he is known to do, putting the ball in the right areas consistently. He adds that whenever a partnership began to build, he varied his pace and trajectories. Highlights the way KG (Kagiso Rabada) bowled this morning, picking up those three wickets, the opposition would surely have looked at the total. After that, he says, it was about playing for the draw, and as a spinner on a turning wicket, it was a dream situation. He admits it has been a tough few weeks but says they will enjoy tonight. Harmer feels the wickets have not offered as much turn as expected on Day 4 and Day 5, and says that in PE (Port Elizabeth or Gqeberha) he tried too hard, as he was desperate to take wickets. He says it was really nice to come into the final Test and have the match go down to the last day, and to be able to bowl freely and do his thing. Says he would not change his journey for anything, reflecting on the person he has become. He gets emotional and pauses after that.
1:37 PM IST Time for the presentation ceremony...
1:36 PM IST No counterpunch from the Aussies - South Africa were in trouble in their second innings, losing 3 wickets before they had wiped out the deficit, and they began Day 4 four down with a lead of only 40. The Proteas needed saviours, and they found two in Ryan Rickelton and Wiaan Mulder, whose centuries turned the match around and set Australia 288 to chase. With all four results on the table, the final day was loaded with anticipation. If Australia could negotiate the new ball with minimal damage, they had a genuine chance of chasing it down. Instead, they were hit by a nightmare start, with Kagiso Rabada striking twice in the first over. The blows kept coming as Simon Harmer came into his own, as he has often done in the past in the fourth innings of a Test.
1:31 PM IST An opportunity missed with the bat - After a day that could have gone badly wrong for Pat Cummins, it was now up to the batters to put things right. With Steve Smith out with a neck injury, Josh Inglis came in and delivered a second Test ton, with others in the top five delivering as well. Australia did not lose a wicket in the last session of Day 2 and finished one run ahead of South Africa, which put them in a strong position to build on. They did build, at least for a while. Inglis and Alex Carey piled on 185 for the fifth wicket, but Simon Harmer dismissed both in quick succession, and that double strike meant Australia’s lead, which had looked like it could be huge, was held to exactly 100.
1:40 PM IST We are gonna have a bowl - Said Nasser Hussain at the Gabba in 2002, and it went down as one of the most infamous toss calls in Test history. For a while at Newlands, it looked as if Pat Cummins' decision to bowl first on a benign surface might be heading the same way. Australia went wicketless in the first session while Marques Ackerman and Aiden Markram raced to 140 by lunch, and by the time the stand ended it was worth 158. The Proteas looked primed to pile up a mountain of runs, just as Australia did to Hussain’s England all those years ago. However, South Africa threw away a promising start, losing 10 wickets for 171 after that 158-run opening stand. It was Mitchell Starc’s burst with the second new ball that made light work of the Proteas’ lower order, and he went on to complete a six-wicket haul.
1:23 PM IST The Proteas claim the crown - The hero of Newlands, Simon Harmer, is engulfed by his teammates, and thanks to his six-wicket haul, the Proteas have got the job done. There was a bit of fight from Australia in the second session, but South Africa held firm to clinch the series. Right through it, the two teams traded blows, and in the end it was Temba Bavuma’s men who landed the knockout blow. With this result, Australia have been knocked off their perch, and South Africa are the new number 1 ranked Test side. The crowd at Newlands matched the occasion of the decider, and the Proteas are taking a lap of the ground to acknowledge them. South Africa also rise one spot to go second in the WTC standings, while New Zealand go to the top and Australia slip to third.

OUT! BOWLED! It's all over. Fittingly, it's Harmer who delivers the final blow, capping a sensational spell with a six-wicket haul in the innings and a remarkable ten-wicket haul across the match. He leaps into the air in delight as his teammates rush in with hugs and handshakes. South Africa win by 176 runs and win the series 2-1. A flighted off-break by Simon from around the stumps, full and landing on middle stump. It dips, grips, and spins away sharply. Hazlewood pushes forward to defend, but is beaten on the outside edge as he fails to cover the turn. The ball clips the off stump, and that's the full stop to a memorable Test series.

OUT! FIFER FOR HARMER! A very well-deserved one. The delivery is full and pitched in line, going away with the angle. Cummins pushes forward to defend but is beaten, with the ball crashing into his back thigh. A huge, confident shout for LBW by everyone around the bat, and the umpire raises his finger without hesitation. Cummins wastes no time in opting for a review. UltraEdge confirms no bat involved, and Ball Tracking shows that the ball has pitched just in line, and it is umpire's call with the ball clipping the off stump. The on-field decision is upheld, leaving the Proteas just one wicket away from wrapping things up.

12:14 PM IST Drinks Break! Australia are eight wickets down, staring at an embarrassing defeat. But to be honest, this has been a shocking batting display from the tourists today. Green dug in a trench along with Cummins, but ran out of patience against Harmer, giving an opening for the Proteas to barge through and get the job done. Cummins has done well in defending and prodding, but the question is, with just two wickets in hand, how long can they resist a boisterous South African bowling attack? Gerald Coetzee will bowl after the break.

Cummins covers the stumps by hanging deep in the crease and completely misjudges the turn as the ball hits his pads. Big appeal for LBW, but not given. No shot offered by Cummins. But Bavuma consults with the keeper and his bowler before taking the review. But this looks a bit high in real time. Ball Tracking shows that it is going over the off stump. Not Out.

11:16 AM IST Welcome back. Newlands is bathed in sunshine as the two umpires and players make their way out to the middle. Cameron Green has been joined by Pat Cummins. Kagiso Rabada will get the session underway with the ball. Green to face. There are two slips and a gully. Here we go!
11:09 AM IST ... DAY 5, SESSION 2 ...
10:43 AM IST South Africa closing in - Cameron Green has been left fighting a lone battle with the tail, and it is not going to be easy with Simon Harmer bowling the way he is. The second session is expected to commence at 11.10 am GMT, and in all likelihood, will be the final session of the series. But this series has rarely gone to script, so who knows? Australia could yet dig in and take this Test into the final session.
10:39 AM IST Rabada and Harmer blow Australia away - As they say, big-match players step up on the biggest of stages, and this was one morning when the Proteas needed Kagiso Rabada to deliver. And deliver he did. After a quiet first innings, while also battling stomach cramps, Rabada jolted the Aussies away this morning, picking up three wickets in his five-over burst up front. Australia never really recovered from that shaky start, and it showed in their running between the wickets as well as their decision-making when it came to shot selection. Simon Harmer was always going to be a key weapon for the Proteas coming into today, and he did not disappoint, piling further misery on the tourists.
10:42 AM IST 10.32 am GMT - LUNCH, DAY 5 - Who would have seen this coming? 7 wickets have fallen in just 26 overs, and Australia are staring down the barrel. South Africa are just 3 wickets away from clinching the series and climbing to the summit of the Test rankings.

Simon Harmer to Mitchell Starc, no run

ballImg89.8kph

OUT! AUSTRALIA ARE SEVEN DOWN! A full delivery fired around leg, Starc clears his front leg and looks to whip it across the line. It takes the inside edge, deflects onto his pads and lobs up behind short leg. Corbin Bosch, the substitute fielder, moves back and completes the catch. Harmer is convinced and immediately wheels away in celebration. But the umpires want to have another look, checking whether it was a bump ball, and send the decision upstairs. The replays confirm the inside edge, with the ball going straight onto the pads before popping up. It's Lunch on Day 5, with Australia in deeper trouble in this chase of 288.

10:31 AM IST Taken at short leg. South Africa are celebrating. The two umpires get together and have decided to send it upstairs to check for a bump ball. It has come clearly off the bat, onto the front pad, before lobbing up.

Kagiso Rabada to Travis Head, no run

ballImg143.4kph

OUT! EDGED AND GONE! 350th Test wicket for Kagiso Rabada, and it is the big scalp of Travis Head. Rabada becomes only the fourth South African to reach this landmark, joining Makhaya Ntini, Shaun Pollock and Dale Steyn. KG drags the length back a bit and keeps it around the off pole. Head's feet go nowhere, and he goes searching for the ball. The ball straightens off the deck just enough to take the outside edge. It flies to Marco Jansen at gully, who is in really tight, but he is equal to the task and gobbles it up around his right shoulder. Rabada did not look like his usual self in the first innings due to stomach cramps and had just a solitary wicket to his name. But boy, has he stepped up on the final day of the series. Australia are now 3 down for 22 in a chase of 288. South Africa are 7 wickets away from a series win.

Kagiso Rabada to Marnus Labuschagne, no run

ballImg142.5kph

OUT! LBW! There are two kinds of leaves, and Marnus Labuschagne has produced one that has led to his downfall. Nip-backer by Rabada, honing in on the off stump, on the fuller side. Labuschagne shoulders arms but the ball jags back in and keeps a bit low as well to hit Marnus on the flap of the back pad. A prolonged appeal by the Proteas and the finger is raised. Labuschagne decides to take the review. Since no shot was offered, the impact does not matter and the Ball Tracking has the ball clipping the off stump. It is the umpire's call, so the on-field decision will stand. Graeme Smith wonders if this is the last time we have seen Marnus Labuschagne in whites for Australia

Kagiso Rabada to Matt Renshaw, no run

OUT! STRANGED DOWN LEG! What a start for South Africa. Matt Renshaw cannot believe his luck. Not a wicket-taking delivery by any means, sprayed down leg, on a nagging length. Renshaw leans inside the line as he looks to use the pace and the angle of the ball and help it away. Gets a tickle on it and Ryan Rickelton moves to his right with the angle of the ball before putting in a dive to snaffle it. South Africa go up in unison, and the finger is raised. A golden duck for Renshaw. Australia are 1/1, chasing 288.
