Ahead of ICC Cricket World Cup, Indian opener Rohit Sharma has said that being the vice-captain of the side has its own responsibilities and he is aware of them. He feels that he has to provide inputs and help out his captain Virat Kohli when the situations get tricky.
“Being a vice-captain, it is my responsibility to stand by him (Virat Kohli) and help him when he is in doubt. That’s what we have done in the last few years,” Rohit Sharma told India Today.
Rohit, who has been of the Indian team since 2007, spoke about how MS Dhoni had the support of senior players like Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag and conceded that as a senior member of the side, it becomes his responsibility to be more involved and help the captain.
“When MS (Dhoni) was the captain, he had Sehwag, Sachin pajji and other senior players in the team to help him and give advice when needed. Now, since we have been in the team for so long, it is our responsibility to help the captain,” he further added.
Speaking about the atmosphere in the Indian team, Rohit said that all types of inputs and suggestions are welcome and that it only helps bind the group together.
“The team is not built from a single player; it belongs to all the 15 members who are playing. So if any of the team members want to come and give any suggestion, it is for the good of the team,” Rohit said.
This comes after Virat Kohli too had earlier said that he always takes the inputs of Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni in crunch situations.
