India vs Australia: Rohit Sharma achieves impressive milestone, joins Hashim Amla in elite list

India vs Australia: Rohit Sharma was able to add another major milestone to his already illustrious career despite missing out on his century by just five runs in Mohali.

Rohit Sharma impressed everyone with his brilliant batting performance during the fourth ODI encounter between India and Australia in Mohali on Sunday and although he missed out on a century by just 5 runs, the Indian cricket team opener was able to add another major milestone to his already illustrious career.

Rohit, who scored 95 off 92 deliveries, became the ninth India cricketer after Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, Mohammad Azharuddin and Virender Sehwag to complete 3000 ODI runs on home soil.

Overall, he also became the joint fastest to reach 3000 runs on home soil along with South Africa’s Hashim Amla (57 innings). Next in the list is Virat Kohli with 63 innings to reach the feat while former India skipper Sourav Ganguly took 69 innings.

It was a day of records for Rohit as he launched Jason Behrendorff for his 217th six in ODI cricket and drew level with former Indian captain MS Dhoni as the batsman with the most number of 6s in ODIs for India.

In the 24th over of the innings, he rocked back to a short ball to a ball from Adam Zampa and smacked him away for the 218th six, which made him the Indian batsman with the most number of sixes in this format.

In the list, next is Sachin Tendulkar with 195 maximums to his name, while former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly has 189 sixes under his belt. Man of the Tournament in 2011 World Cup – Yuvraj Singh – has 153 ODI sixes.

It was also a good outing for his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan and the duo became the first Indian opening pair to score 1000 runs against Australia in ODIs once they strung a 62-run partnership.

West Indies’ Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes is the only other pair to score 1000 runs against Australia. Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar is third on the list of most runs against Australia with 827 runs.
