England fans gave their verdict on Monday by selecting an all-time best Test eleven to mark the national team’s historic moment as the first Test against India at Edgbaston, starting on Wednesday, will be its 1000th Test.
Three from the current Test team find place in the side chosen by cricket fans across England from a list of 100 that included WG Grace, the father of English cricket. The online survey was completed by 6,108 fans over 10 days in July, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced in a statement on Monday.
The team surprisingly does not include former England skipper and batting stalwart, Graham Gooch, but the selection would be universally approved.
Current skipper Joe Root, Pietersen who quit under controversial circumstances but was one of England’s most influential batsmen during the memorable phase in the 2000s, and leading swing bowler James Anderson find a place.
The XI: Alastair Cook, Len Hutton, David Gower, Kevin Pietersen, Joe Root, Ian Botham, Alan Knott (wk), Graeme Swann, Fred Trueman, James Anderson, Bob Willis.
Selected players will be invited on the third day of the Edgbaston Test to a parade. England batting legend Len Hutton died in 1990 while fearsome fast bowler Trueman passed away in 2006.
“To be selected in the best-ever England Test XI by cricket fans across the country is incredibly humbling. When I think of some of the incredible players who haven’t made the cut, legends of the game such as Denis Compton and Wally Hammond, I’m not sure I would have voted for myself, but I certainly want to thank the fans for thinking of me,” skipper Joe Root said in the statement.
