India vs England Highlights, 1st Test: Jaiswal has been especially brutal to debutant Hartley

India vs England Highlights, 1st Test Day 1: India were comfortably placed at 119 for one at stumps after bowling out England for 246 on the opening day of the first Test here on Thursday.Young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was batting on a 70-ball 76 while Shubman Gill was unbeaten on 14 at the end of the day's play, as India trailed by 127 runs after losing skipper Rohit Sharma (24). England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and chose to bat first in Hyderabad. Openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley came out as aggressive as ever as they smashed Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj all around the ground in the first 10 overs. However, India came roaring into the game once the spinners came on. Ravichandran Ashwin drew first blood in the 12th over by dismissing Duckett. Jadeja then got the wicket of Ollie Pope and that brought Joe Root in. Root had a close call off the second ball he faced off Jadeja, with India unsuccessfully trying to overturn an LBW appeal that didn't go their way. Crawley fell soon thereafter but Root and Bairstow then steadied the ship for England.

The pair put up 61 off 105 balls but they were both sent back soon after resumption of play in the second session. India jumped on top with two more wickets, with Jasprit Bumrah also getting on board on what has largely been the spinners' day out. Captain Ben Stokes switched gears when England got down to their last two wickets and he shared a useful 38-run partnership with debutant Tom Hartley for the eighth wicket. He had Mark Wood at the other at Tea, at which point England were 215/8. Stokes went past his half-century with a six and then hit another off the very next ball. Wood, however, fell soon after the resumption of play and that brought No.10 Jack Leach into the middle. Stokes harvested strike as much as possible before getting an unplayable delivery from Bumrah and falling on 70 off 88. England were thus all out for 246 runs.

England return to India after about two and a half years and both sides have had a change of captains and coaches in the intervening period. India were led by Virat Kohli in the 2020/21 series and coached by Ravi Shastri. Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane were an integral part of the side. This time, both those stalwarts are out of the team while Kohli is unavailable for the first two Tests. Rohit Sharma is captain and this will be his first five-match Test series leading the side and Rahul Dravid is head coach. Apart from that, though, one can't say that their approach has changed too much in the longest format of the game.

The same can't be said about England though. Under captain Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, who took over in May 2022, England's approach to Test cricket has pretty much captured the world's imagination. Their scoring rates often tend to be high even by ODI standards and their aggressive declarations have either led to them eking out a win on docile pitches like the ones they found in Pakistan or giving away what could have been straightforward victories, like they did in the first Ashes Test last year. The big question that has always been lurking around is whether England's ‘Bazball’ can work when they tour India.

We will find the answer to that question but despite England not losing a series since Stokes and McCullum took over, they remain the underdogs in this one, with yet another series win for India being the most unsurprising result. England are the last side to have defeated India in India, in the 2012/13 series. Since then, India have never even come close to losing a series at home and have lost just three Test matches overall in that period. Their winning streak currently stands at 16, six more than the next best which was 10 managed by Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting's iterations of the all-conquering Australia in the late 1990s and the 2000s. Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have been at the heart of this run of success and while they both may be approaching the twilight of their career, they remain just as potent with the ball and the bat. Add to that the fact that Axar Patel is another highly effective spin-bowling all-rounder and it becomes pretty clear that, Bazball or not, any kind of success for England in this series would be a vindication of their approach.

Here are some of the highlights of Day 1 of the first Test between India and England

  • England were buoyed by a quickfire 55-run opening stand between Duckett and Crawley
  • Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja then took three wickets for five runs after which a 61-run stand between Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root kept England steady
  • India roared back with a flurry of wickets in 2nd session
  • Stokes shared a 38-run stand with Tom Hartley and a 41-run stand with Mark Wood
  • Stokes was the last England wicket to fall and he fell for 70 off 88 balls
  • England were all out for 246 runs
  • Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal gave India a rollicking start. Jaiswal reached his half-century off 47 balls.
  • Rohit was dismissed for 24 by Jack Leach when he tried to charge down the track and hit a six.
  • India went to stumps at 119/1 with Jaiswal (73) and Shubamn Gill (14) in the middle.

India vs England Live Score, IND vs ENG 1st Test Day 1: The players making their way back

India vs England Live Score, IND vs ENG 1st Test Day 1: The Indians get into a brief huddle. The stadium has filled up more than what was the case in the first session. The hosts have a real task in their hands with Root and Bairstow looking as good as they did in the first session and Stokes still to come. India start the session with Axar, who is probably their best bet at getting Bairstow out. He is bowling to Root.

India vs England Live Score, IND vs ENG 1st Test Day 1: The first session

India vs England Live Score, IND vs ENG 1st Test Day 1: Well the day started off with Bazball making landfall on Indian soil. Jsaprit Bumrah, one of the most feared fast bowlers in the world, and Mohammed Siraj, himself quite highly regarded in the longest format, could do nothing more than warm the ball for the spinners and openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett made the most of the conditions. Then came in Ashwin and Jadeja and the wickets came soon. First Ashwin dismissed Duckett, then Jadeja got Pope and then Ashwin got Crawley. Jadeja looked set to get the dangerous Joe Root as well but the former England captain escaped by the breath of his hair, or the hair on his bat. Root and Bairstow did very well to not just steady the England ship but also to keep the scoreboard ticking well. All in all, England would be very happy with how they managed to pull things back in that session, India won't be too sad considering they did get three wickets. And finally, us the watches have to be nothing but happy and thriller because that was a humdinger of a session and if that is a taster for what is to come in this series, well, strap in then folks. Strap in.

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: A milestone for Jadeja and Ashwin

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: They are some ways away from getting to their individual milestones but the Ashwin-Jadeja pair have gone past Kumble-Harbhajan and are now the most prolific bowling duo for India in Test cricket. The wicket of Crawley was the 502nd for the pair and that thus takes them past the 501 managed by Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh. Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon lead the way with 643 wickets in 81 Tests among active pairs while English pace bowlers James Anderson and Stuart Broad lead the pack with 1039 wickets in 138 matches.

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: LUNCH! England 108/3 in 28 overs

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: India may have got three wickets but England would be the happier side here. The openers made the most of the runs on offer off the seamers and then Root and Bairstow kept them floating and moving well after England lost three wickets in a clump to Ashwin and Jadeja. Bairstow is on 32 off 44, Root is on 18 off 35. The partnership between them is on 48 off 77 going into Lunch. Ashwin's figures are 2/20 in 8 overs, Jadeja has 1/34 in 8. Axar has given just 13 runs in his four overs, Bumrah 12 in four and Siraj 28 in as many.

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: Axar asking Bairstow some questions

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: Bairstow was troubled by Axar the most on that last tour and it is more of the same to a certain extent. The only difference being that Bairstow clearly is in better form. He managed to put the third ball of the 25th past slip to the boundary but almost all the rest of the balls were either close to the batter's outside edge or to the stumps. Bairstow on 25 , Root on 16.

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: A ball change coming

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: The ball doesn't go through the ring in the umpire's hands and so it has to be changed now, in just 20 overs. Bairstow and Root have looked steady, the latter hasn't really given a chance since that early LBW appeal. The pair have faced 29 balls for 20 runs and so England still going at a good click. Bairstow is on 15 off 21, Root on seven off 10.

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: 17 overs done

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: Bairstow followed up that shot with a fantastic late (extremely late) cut. It was so late that Jadeja started going up in celebration thinking Bairstow has missed it, but somehow the Yorkshire man gets it to the deep third boundary despite having practically no room. Brilliant shot from Bairstow. Then Gill makes a good effort off the last ball at the boundary to save a four. Bairstow is on 12 off 11, Root on two off two.

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: GONE! Ashwin gets another!

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: Well the two spinners have turned it around completely after that first hour. Crawley drills the first ball of the 16th straight to mid-off. It was a low catch for the fielder Siraj, a very sharp grab in the end. A lengthy check from the third umpire to see if the ball was grounded or not and in the end, this decision goes India's way. Bairstow has come in and England have lost three wickets for five runs!

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: A little scare for Root

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: Pope's dismissal brought Joe Root on and the great man had a scary moment off the second ball that he faced. He attempted to paddle it off the stumps and the Indians appeal. Umpire says no, but Jadeja convinces Rohit to go upstairs. Hard to say if there was any bat on it from the replay and it takes a long time for ultra edge to load. When it does it is very scratchy but third umpire Marais Erasmus concludes that there is a bit of a murmur as ball passes bat.

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: GONE! Now Jadeja gets one

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: EDGE AND TAKEN! The Indian spinners are in the game now. Jadeja fires it in fourth ball of the 15th and the ball then straightens, Pope lunges forward, outside edge and Rohit takes a low catch. Pope lingers to see if Rohit had grounded the ball, nothing of that sort happened.

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: OUT! Ashwin gets the breakthrough!

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: Big appeal, umpire gives it and India celebrate. Duckett, though, reviews it quite confidently. He hasn't got bat on it but he indicates to Crawley that the bounce was too high. The ball tracking holds up umpire's appeal with the ball clipping the bails on middle and leg. Duckett is not happy with that of course but he has to go after giving England a very good start.

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: The fifty has come up in 10.5 overs, which is very slow by T20 standards, England must be looking to do better surely. Duckett paddles the fourth ball of the 11th from Jadeja fine to the boundary and then brings out the conventional sweep. A single off the last ball and Duckett is on 34 off 36, Crawley on 17 off 31.

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: Spin at both ends now and one could argue that the Test match has truly started now, with all due respects to the incredible Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. That's nine runs off the eighth over and spin comes in for the first time. Ravindra Jadeja replaces Jasprit Bumrah for the eighth over. Let's see how the England openers approach this situation, they have been fantastic against the pacers so far. Duckett on 23 off 27, Crawley on 16 off 22.

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: 5 overs gone

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: Bazball always makes for an entertaining watch, regardless of whether Englanda are dong well or not and there has been that aspect too today already, in just the first five overs of a Test match if you can believe it. Bumrah sliced through Duckett with the fifth ball of that over with the ball hitting the seam and ducking in to beat his inside edge as the batter looked to go through mid-off. Then a single and Duckett is on 11 off 13, his strike rate has been hurt here you know. Crawley on 15 off 17.

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: Slip taken off

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: There is the first reaction from Rohit to this England scoring rate, he has taken a slip off and placed him at covers. Bumrah continues for his third over and Jadeja gives a little glimpse of his superman fielding abilities off the second ball. Duckett struck the second delivery hard and Jadeja dived to his weak side to save what would have been a certain boundary. It instead became a dot ball.

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: FOUR! Shot from Crawley!

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: Well Rohit is sticking to his aggressive Test match field and one can't blame him. This is a Test match after all. But say that to England. This one is not quite pitched up by Siraj, Crawley drives it on the up to the offside.

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: Well unlike what KP and most people who know how England play expected, no boundaries off the first over, let alone the first ball. Crawley choosing to be respectful towards Bumrah and leaving the deliveries outside off, the fourth ball darted into Crawley and tucked it away for a Single. Duckett then went after the only a ball he face, a length delivery, and was beaten. Now here comes home boy Siraj from the other end.

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: Rohit says that the pitch looks dry. He would've batted first but says that India have the skills to deal with batting or bowling first. "A good series, I am playing for the first time - five Test matches. The guys are excited. It'll be challenging but we are up for it. We have played in these conditions before. We know what to expect and what we need to do, it's all about executing your skills, backing yourself and being brave enough to take the opportunity. We've got three spinners and two seamers - Bumrah, Siraj, Axar, Ashwin and Jadeja. It was a tough one (to leave out Kuldeep Yadav), we thought a lot about it. Axar, whenever he had played, he has done well and bats really well in these conditions. He got some really good score the last time we played against Australia. Probably the reason we went with Axar," he said.

Stokes says that Leach is a great player to lead this young England spin trio. "I have got full confidence in everyone. We picked a XI that we thought is going to give us the best chance of winning. Woody is that X-factor bowler," he said.

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: The Shoaib Bashir situation

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: McCullum had said about a day before England announced their squad that spinner Shoaib Basheer had to stay back in the UAE to sort out his visa issues. While McCullum sounded pretty confident of it being sorted out in time for Bashir to be available for the first Test, it turned out that the 20-year-old needed to fly back to the UK to sort it out. It has led to a bit of a furor online with many pointing out difficulties for players of Pakistani origin to obtain visas in India, a case in point being the difficulties faced by Australia's Usman Khawaja last year. The British government in fact called on India to "treat British citizens fairly at all times in its visa process". Ben Stokes was understandably livid as captain for the player to have had to go through this ordeal and missing out on potentially making his Test debut in Hyderabad. Bashir has obtained his visa though and you might see him today in the England dressing room at some point in this Test but he can play on in Visakhapatnam, having had no time to prepare after arriving here. India captain Rohit Sharma also expressed his sympathies. "I feel for him honestly. This is probably the first time he's coming for the fisrst time with the England set up. It's not easy for anyone. It could be one of our guys who wanted to come to England and has been denied and is not available to get the visa. Undfortunately I dont sit in the visa office to give you more details on that. I hope he can make it here quickly and enjoy our country and play some cricket as well," said Rohit.

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: England's spinners

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: Jack Leach is pretty much the only name who would be somewhat familiar to Indian fans. England have named two other spinners apart from him. Tom Hartley is making his international debut while Rehan Ahmed has played just one Test before, in Pakistan, and is playing in India for the first time. Hartley has 40 wickets at 36.57 from just 20 first-class appearances for Lancashire. Ahmed, meanwhile took 5 for 48 in the second innings of the third Test in Karachi.

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: Shubman Gill's form

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: It is quite clear now that Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal have taken up the positions left empty by Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane. While Jaiswal is opening instead of coming in at Rahane's No.5, Gill is now being seen as a direct replacement for Pujara at No.3 but his recent form in Test cricket hasn't been encouraging. Gill made an incredible start to his Test career in Australia but seems to have tapered off since in general. He has scored 1040 runs in 20 matches and is averaging just 30.58. That said, one of his two Test centuries have come in India, with the other being in similar conditions in Bangladesh, and so this series is a chance for him to get some confidence back and establish himself in home conditions at least.

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: Will it spin on Day 1?

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: Kevin Pietersen had said that he would be surprised if it doesn't spin on the first day in Hyderabad. But initial pictures and history indicates a dry pitch which means that a lot of runs could be on the offer as well. There could be some moisture content due to the colder temperatures in the morning which, in fact, could be of some help to the seamers.

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: India's wicketkeeper

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: Rahul Dravid said that KL Rahul will not be keeping wickets in this series. While it is tempting to think that KS Bharat will invariably take the gloves, one might just never know with this Indian team. There is the incredibly talented Dhruv Jurel in the wings as well. The most likely candidate seems to be Bharat, though, whose wicketkeeping at home has earned rave reviews and considering England's reputation to score quick, an assured pair of hands behind the wickets could end up being the difference between a win and any other result.

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: England in India over the years

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: England first toured India for a three-match Test series back in 1933/34. The visitors won that series and their next visit came only in 1951/52. That five-match Test series ended in a 1-1 draw, with India winning the fifth Test by an innings and eight runs and thus recording their first ever international victory. Vinoo Mankad took eight wickets in England's first innings and four in the second while Ghulam Ahmed took four in the second as well. Pankaj Roy and Polly Umrigar scored centuries for India.

India won the next series they hosted in 1961/62 2-0 and both sides played draws in all five Tests of the series after that in the country in 1963/64. India won the next series in 1972/73 2-1 and then England recorded a win at last in 1976/77, taking that series 3-1. The two sides then played a one-off Golden Jubilee Test that England won by 10 wickets thanks to Ian Botham taking six wickets in the first Indian innings, scoring 114 for England and then taking seven in the second, leaving England to chase a target of 96. England then toured India for a six-match Test series in 1981/82 and India won that 1-0. England won the next time they came to the country though, beating India 2-1 in 1984/85. India won the next two series on home soil in 1992/93 and 2001/02 before England manage to draw the 2005/06 series. India then won the 2008/09 series before England pulled off the shocker of all shockers by beating India in 2012/13 2-1. They haven't really come close to repeating that feat since then, though, losing 4-0 on their next tour in 2016/17 and 3-1 in 2020/21.

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: Rohit on Kuldeep vs Axar

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: This is what the Indian captain had to say on the debate. "It was a bit of a headache for us to decide who it was going to be. I'm not going to say who it is but it was a challenge for us to make that decision. We know we've got quality around our spin-bowling department, which is a good sign. When you've got quality around your team, when there's a headache to make your playing XI, that's a good sign," he said.
