India and Sri Lanka played out a thriller tie in the series opener
India and Sri Lanka played out a thriller tie in the series opener

Leading India from the front in his first 50-over game after the heartbreaking 2023 World Cup final, skipper Rohit Sharma smashed a quick-fire half-century in the opening One Day International (ODI) of the three-match series against hosts Sri Lanka at the R.Premadasa Stadium on Friday. Though Rohit's knock laid the foundation for a successful run-chase in the series opener, Sri Lanka bowlers staged a comeback with game-changing wickets of Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer and Washington Sundar.

Reviving India's 231 run-chase, KL Rahul and Axar Patel stitched a 57-run partnership but the duo failed to take India across the finish line. Playing a crucial cameo, Shivam Dube put India on the cusp with a boundary in the 47th over. However, Dube couldn't finish off the game as the Indian batter perished for 25 off 24 balls. Completing Sri Lanka's late comeback, skipper Charith Asalanka castled Arshdeep Singh on the next ball as India folded for 230 to end the contest in a tie.

Earlier, Dunith Wellalage played a crucial hand in helping Sri Lanka set a respectable total in the series opener against Rohit Sharma's Team India at the R.Premadasa Stadium. Pathum Nissanka's gritty 56 off 75 balls, followed by Wellalage's maiden half-century, helped Sri Lanka cross the 200-run mark in the 1st One Day International (ODI) of the three-match series. Wellalage's career-best knock of 67 (65) powered Sri Lanka to 230-8 in 50 overs.

As many as 8 wickets were shared by Indian bowlers - Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar. India got off to a terrific start, taking just 2.3 overs to land the first blow. And it had to be Siraj, right? With some early movement, Avishka Fernando wanted to go aerial. The only difference in plan was that he mistimed it and hit it straight to the fielder. After a below-par powerplay, skipper Rohit Sharma introduced Dube, who bagged his maiden ODI wicket in the 13th over.

Shivam Dube over Riyan Parag

Leading the batting charge of the hosts, Nissanka then revived the innings with a fighting half-century. Earlier, skipper Charith Asalanka won the toss and opted to bat first. For Sri Lanka, Mohammed Shiraz made his debut. Don't get that wrong, it's Shiraz. Not Siraj. Big news came from the Indian camp was that Dube got picked in the playing XI ahead of Riyan Parag.

After the 2023 World Cup, India have played only a handful of ODIs. Three to be exact – against South Africa in late December. But with the T20 World Cup done and dusted, the Men in Blue are back to thrill in the 50-overs format as India take on Sri Lanka in a three-match series, the first of which takes place today at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

India vs Sri Lanka rivalry

The India vs Sri Lanka rivalry used to produce a string of high-octane, tense and exciting contests in the 1990s and the mid-2000s. But ever since the retirements of Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, it has pretty much been one-way traffic – more so in the last four-five years – and the recently concluded T20I leg was a proven example of the same. Not only did India beat Sri Lanka 3-0, but they also thumped them from start to finish.

The return of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma

The ODIs promise to bring about little change as India have only been bolstered by the returns of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, and Sri Lanka dented with injuries to Matheesha Pathirana and Dilshan Madushanka, who have been ruled out of the series. But Sri Lanka's misery is music to India's ears. As the preparations for next year's Champions Trophy get underway, India couldn't have asked for a better opponent than Sri Lanka to switch from T20Is to ODIs.

Focus on Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul

Rohit may want to stay clear from calling it a practice match, the huge gulf between the two teams, making it a mismatch of sorts, proves the Indian captain otherwise. The returning duo of Kohli and Rohit isn't the only comeback India is looking forward to. Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul, who have bossed the ODIs lately, are coming back into the side after a long gap. Rahul has been away from the national picture since the Test series against England, while Shreyas' contract was terminated by the BCCI.

India's ODI future

But if there are any two cricketers who deserve to walk back into the Indian team, it's Rahul and Iyer. Who can forget their stellar show at the World Cup, where India produced that dream run of winning 10 consecutive matches and finished runner-up. Let not the memories of November 19 put a dampener on what these two guys achieved during that unforgettable two-month campaign. With Rohit, Kohli, Rahul and Iyer all likely to get a look in, the Indian ODI set-up promises to wear an entirely different look from its T20I unit.

India at R Premadasa

Having said that, there was rain on the horizon. Yes, this time of the year is never easy on Sri Lanka, especially when there is cricket. Remember last year's Asia Cup, where rain washed out a couple of games, forced some into reserve days and made the groundmen work extra time? Unfortunately, we are up and around the same time of the year. Overcast and windy conditions make it a win toss, bowl first kind of a game. The R Premadasa has been a happy hunting ground for India, even more for Virat Kohli, who has scored over 600 runs from 11 matches here in Colombo and boasts an average of more than 100. If there is one venue Kohli would have loved to make a comeback, it's here.

Kuldeep Yadav can script history

Then there is Kuldeep Yadav, who is on the road to becoming India's No. 1 spinner across formats. The last time Kuldeep faced Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka in a non-final - the Super Fours of the Asia Cup - he picked up 4/43 to dismantle their chase of 214. They were bowled out for 172, falling short by 41 runs to give India a rather easy win in the end. What are the chances of a similar sight unfolding today? We say at least 80 percent. Why? Because this Sri Lankan batting appears weak against quality spin, and with Kuldeep ready to unleash with all his might, expecting some carnage wouldn't be an understatement.

More on Gautam Gambhir era

The ODI series marked the association that is Rohit Sharma and coach Gautam Gambhir. In fact, there is so much history between the current coach and ODI captain of Team India. Rohit and Gambhir were teammates when India won the first-ever T20 World Cup in 2007. Even BCCI chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar was part of that squad. And now, today, 17 years later, as three are working in tandem to take Indian cricket forward and to greater heights. A beautiful chapter in Rohit's career ended with Rahul Dravid moving on from his role as coach; however, with Gambhir coming on board, another one promises to ensue, one that is hopefully more blossoming and fruitful than the glorious period that went by.

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: If there’s ever a pitch suited to Shivam Dube’s bowling it is this. Slow, medium-pacer on a dry surface, just enough to keep the batter in two minds. Starts off by giving away a couple of singles in the first three balls but also keeps Kusal Mendis on his toes. Also, he is rushing through his first over. Dots, followed by a not-so-long average. Then sends down a couple of wides and then a single to third man

Sri Lanka 37/1 after 10 overs.

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: Here comes spin

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: It was only a matter of time before Rohit introduced the spinners and the first one that’s given the ball is Axar Patel. The first one grips and turns, as the dry surface comes into effect already. Bu Nissanka latches on to a poor short ball from the left-armer. Slows the next one down and the one after turns a mile, beating KL Rahul too, who fails to grab the ball. Pitches on the rough and Rohit makes a gesture.

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: Kusal Mendis edges one but the ball goes through the vacant gully position. Needs to switch into the T20 mode to get himself going. Arshdeep sends a wide as his bouncer goes a tad too high above the batter’s head. Nissanka goes for the cover drive but doesn’t connect well at all. Shakes his head. Arshdeep almost gets his man as Nissanka’s pick up lands in Siraj’s hands, but the dive and motions took the ball out. Hands on head all over.

ndia vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: A slight change in tactics from Siraj as he cuts down on the width at the popping crease. Goes straighter now. Misses his line on one occasion with a wide but then attacks the batters’ stumps, squares of Nissanka, who seems to be growing in confidence. But just as Siraj erred in line, Nissanka takes control, One more four - this time through square. All four boundaries thus far have come off his bat.

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: Sri Lanka going at just over 3 an over

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: Six overs gone and it's been India all through. Early days in the match but India have dictated terms. Only two boundaries for Sri Lanka but more importantly, a lack of confidence in the batters’ approach, torn between smashing and defending. Kusal Mendis is 2 off 12 as Arshdeep Singh is constantly nagging in and around that 4th stump line.

Sri Lanka 15/1 after 6 overs.

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: Tight for Sri Lanka but no damage done

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: A bit of a miscommunication but nothing to worry for Sri Lanka. Siraj doing Siraj things. Only a couple of runs but he would have his heart in his mouth.

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: Early strike for India as Siraj removes Avishka Fernando caught at third man. Still warming up bowling in the early 130s, Fernando tried to go after an outswinger. It took the top edge and the ball landed straight into Arshdeep Singh's hands. Sri Lanka lost their first and any surprises? It's Siraj with the first wicket.

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: When it’s Mohammed Siraj, against Sri Lanka, in Colombo, expect some early news. First ball foxes Nissanka who inside edges it but without any damage. Siraj follows it by beating him outside off next ball. Nissanka flays the ball through the covers two deliveries later for Sri Lanka's first boundary. The ball is keeping low and wait for it… some dark clouds have already gathered.

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: Phew! Close shave. The groundsmen had already stepped on to the field with covers right after the national anthems. But just when they feared the worst – possibly some drizzles – damage was averted. Right then. The players are out, as are openers Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando. The cameras turn towards Virat Kohli, who says a couple of things to KL Rahul, ready to take his position behind the stumps. With the ball is Mohammed Siraj.

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: Here's what Sri Lanka's line-up looks like

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: Sri Lanka hand debut to Mohammed Shiraz. The uncapped medium-pacer has picked 125 First-Class wickets and 80 in List A, and if he can delivery even 20 percent of what India's Mohammed Siraj did against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup, it’s can be a win-win situation for the hosts. Asalanka mentioned the ‘bad things’ that happened in the third T20I, which is a good sign, as it means SL can win that as a badge and use its better memories to improve their game and come out stronger today.

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: INDIA TEAM NEWS

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: India have gone ahead with a pretty expected Playing XI. Gill to open, Kohli at 3, Shreyas at 4 and KL Rahul at 5 and as the wicketkeeper. No Rishabh Pant and the three frontline bowlers are Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav, along with all-rounders Axar Patel and Washington Sundar. That is a LOT OF SPIN. Shivam Dube is the third all-rounder, getting the nod ahead of Riyan Parag.

What do you make of this Playing XI?

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: The last time India played Sri Lanka in a one-dayer…

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: It was at the Wankhede Stadium. Occasion: The World Cup. Rohit Sharma was dismissed for a duck after which Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill scored big, contributing 88, 82 and 92 respectively. No one got a hundred from India but they still managed to out a humongous 357/8 on the board. It was always going to be a herculean task chasing these many runs down but no one expected the manner in which the second innings panned out.

Sri Lanka were rocked for 55. Their first ODI against India since the Asia Cup final where they were knocked over 50, just five more than that. Mohammed Shami's ruthless 5/18 and Mohammed Siraj's 3/16 knocked the stuffing out of the 1996 World Cup winner, handing India a win by 302 runs.

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: Why Jasprit Bumrah isn't playing

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: Jasprit Bumrah has been given some well-deserved rest from the tour of Sri Lanka as the ideas is to keep him fresh, energetic and charged up for the long Test season that lies ahead – two Tests against Bangladesh, three against New Zealand before India tour Australia for a five-Test series to try and retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Bumrah, especially overseas, becomes an asset – not that he isn't at home – but India would want to repeat the travesty of their previous tour Down Under. Yes, they won that series 2-1 but it wasn't before they lost almost half their squad to injuries. Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Ravichandran Ashwin, Hanuma Vihari and Bumrah himself. India stare at a rare hat-trick of series wins – something that will remain immortal for years for come and there is no way they can do it without Bumrah. Well, sentiments aside, they still can, but with a fit Bumrah around, they definitely can. Rest up, BOOM. Pretty sure we'll see you soon.

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: When it's Colombo, refer to him as Virat 'The Beast' Kohli please

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: Every batter has his/her favourite ground in the world. Sachin Tendulkar loves batting in Chennai and Sydney, while Sunil Gavaskar revealed batting in Delhi and Melbourne. For Kohli, this pick becomes difficult as he has scored runs all around the world. But even then, the Adelaide Oval and the R Premadasa Stadium in Australia and Sri Lanka stand out as Kohli' two most favourite hunting grounds.

In Colombo, Kohli has racked up 644 runs in 11 ODIs at a jaw-dropping average of 107.3 including four centuries. In fact, during last year's Asia Cup, when Kohli slammed his 45th ODI century – against Pakistan – it was in Colombo itself. As Kohli makes his return to the ODI fold after eight long months, will it be another carnage that ensues or a rare failure at a ground he has a stellar record in? We shall find out.

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: Rohit Sharma's only real challenge of this series

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: Rohit has a truckload of talent to pick from, but one person missing from that treasure is Hardik Pandya, which makes India's all-rounder pick in a bit of a spot. Ravindra Jadeja has been given a break too, which truth be told, leaves Rohit a slightly handicapped. Of course, he has options to pick from. Shivam Dube, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar, but barring Axar, expected 10 overs from either Dube or Washy would be expecting too much. But here's a fix. With Riyan Parag available as well, how about all three of them combine to chip in 10 overs? That sounds like a plan, doesn't it? Pretty sure Rohit has already thought about it so we would stay away from taking the credit.

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: In case you’re wondering where Ishan Kishan is…

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: Sadly, we don’t know either. But what we do know is that currently he is nowhere around the scene in connection with the national team. Ishan's reluctance to play domestic cricket could have sidelines him for good as there is no whereabout of his status. With Rishabh Pant back, India are in a much-better position as far as the wicket-keeping conundrum goes, with Sanju Samson, KL Rahul being the other two options. In T20Is too, it's mostly Samson vs Pant, and Jitesh Sharma a close third, leaving no room for the explosive Ishan, who by the way, holds the record for the fastest double century in ODIs.

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: KL Rahul back to the format he loves

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: KL Rahul has played 50 Tests, 75 ODIs and 72 T20Is for India, but it's the 50-overs format where he revels the most. In his newly-discovered role at No. 4 and the added responsibility of keeping wicket, Rahul was unstoppable during the World Cup. However, he fell behind in the pecking order and with India playing only a handful of ODIs since November 19 last year, but now that the 50-overs are back, as is Rahul, who should walk back into the side as India's No. 4.

There is plenty of noise around Rahul, mostly around his rumoured exit from Lucknow Super Giants and a possible return to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who are looking for their next captain with Faf du Plessis hitting 40. But all that can wait. Let KL’s calmness take over the one-day mould as he tries and claim back his place in the side which he never lost.

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: Shreyas Iyer's shot at redemption

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: When the BCCI decided to pull the plug on Shreyas Iyer's central contract, many felt he was hard done by. The guy was India's third highest scorer at the ODI World Cup and without him India may have struggled to reach the semis. But at the end of the day no one is bigger than the sport. Iyer's reluctance to play domestic cricket due to his back issues landed him in trouble and eventually cost him a place in the Indian squad and the T20 World Cup.

In between, Shreyas pummelled 351 runs in the IPL and led Kolkata Knight Riders to win. And now that the suspension is lifted, he is back, stronger and fiercely determined as ever. He may have lost his opportunity to become a World Champion but with the Champions Trophy coming up in seven months' time, expect Iyer to come out all guns blazing. He was seen practicing the short ball – which has often led to severe criticism around his batting – getting tips from none other than captain Rohit, one of the best players of the pull shot in the world.

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: The big hits have been unleashed, Gambhir in awe

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, IND vs SL 1st ODI: While India' first net session was mostly about the internet-breaking pictures featuring Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir, things go down to business as Rohit and Kohli hit their straps. As they unravelled the big hits, Gambhir took note of each and every stroke, often admiring the range the two batters possess. Gambhir knows that he will be working very closely with them for the next couple of years, if not all the way up to the 2027 World Cup, and whether he would be able to inject any improvements in their batting – Rohit and Kohli don't need any at this point in their careers – is uncertain, he damn sure would motivate them to carry on for as long as they desire to. Gambhir has already throw the gate open for the 2027 World Cup for Rohit and Kohli, and it's only a matter of whether their fitness remains up to the mark.
