India vs West Indies, 2nd Test Day 1 Highlights: India 288/4 at Stumps as Kohli, Jadeja put visitors back on top

Rohit Sharma walks all the way across to get to this full ball wide outside off from Gabriel for the third ball of the 11th, drives it through extra cover for four. He then pulls the next ball over long leg for four. It came off the toe end but Rohit seems to have no qualms in taking his chances.

Gabriel goes a bit too short and wide for the last ball of the 9th, Jaiswal is on to it like a rash. Gets the cut out and sends it to the boundary. Spin to come in the 10th over in the form of Jomel Worrican now. 

The first half an hour shows that it will be a long hard toil for fast bowlers on this pitch. Rohit on 9 off 22, Jaiswal on 15 off as many. Shannon Gabriel has replaced Kemar Roach after the latter bowled just three overs.

He gets his strike to 100 with that one, 14 off 14. Short from Joseph, the pitch is a featherbed and so it rises to about waist high, nicely in the arc for Jaiswal who deposits it over midwicket.

Jaiswal went hard at Joseph after the latter pulled the length back, thich outside edge that races over the head of gully and it goes to the boundary. McKenzie was the fielder and it was a good leap but maybe a tad bit late. Would have been an absolute stunnerazzo had he pulled it off though.

Short of a length from Roach, rising to just about hip high for Rohit and that is bread and butter for the Indian captain. Pulls it over deep square leg off the front foot. 

Rohit has scored two in 16, Jaiswal on three off nine. Not much life in this pitch for sure, the batters will be taking their time it seems. 

The batters run three off the first ball and then a leg bye off the fourth. Rohit and Jaiswal, in case you've forgotten, had put up a 229-run opening partnership in the first match which wiped off the West Indies' total on its own. The hosts would be looking to prevent anything like that from happening today, after which they have a wounded Shubman Gill and a probably century hungry Virat Kohli to deal with. Alzarri Joseph shares the new ball with Roach. 

Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal are in the middle now, Kemar Roach starts the attack for the West Indies. 

Shardul Thakur seems to have picked up a niggle and so Mukesh replaces him in the squad. Curious that he has been chosen ahead of Navdeep Saini who used to be well ahead in the pecking order. 

The two teams have lined up adjacent to each other. First comes India's national anthem, and then the West Indies'. Mukesh Kumar standing there in an India jersey for the first time, Kohli for the 500th.

“Shannon comes back, pitch has a bit of moisture which we want to use. Kirk McKenzie will debut, he replaces Raymon Reifer. We were decent bowling-wise, we need to continue being disciplined. We need to take the first game off our memories and play their quality bowlers well. Our rivalry has a come a long way, we haven't won a match in a while. It was always a joy to watch Brian Lara and Sachin back in the day. Need to give the fans more memories.”

“We were looking to bat first. Nice and sunny as well. Pitch will get slower as the match goes on, so okay with batting first. One change: Shardul has pulled up a niggle - a groin issue, it brings Mukesh on for a debut. Lots of memories from the rivalry, especially our batters trying to put their hands up against great fast bowlers. Even now you have to work hard to get a result, especially the batters. Scoring isn't easy. We got a lot of positives and hope to get the right result.”

The West Indies have handed debut to Kirk McKenzie and brought in pacer Shannon Gabriel into their XI.

Amid all the good performance by India's top-order and spinners Ashwin and Jadeja, one must not take the focus away from Shubman Gill, Ajinkya Rahane and Ishan Kishan. Gill has started his new journey at No.3 while Rahane will get one last chance to cement his place at No.5 before the likes of Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul regain their fitness. As far as Ishan Kishan is concerned, he has a golden chance to grab the keeper-batter's spot in the absence of Rishabh Pant.

India coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma reflect on the 100th Test match between India and West Indies.

“What really makes this rivalry special is the fans. Even if they are not able to come to watch the matches, they still talk about Test cricket. I haven't played here in 12 years and still some of them meet me, remind me about my stats and make me feel good,” said India head coach Rahul Dravid.

“It's a historic moment. There is so much history between the two teams. Over the years, we have seen some really cricket be it in India or in West Indies. I made my debut against them. We hope we can continue the legacy of the former players,” said India captain Rohit Sharma.

Yashavi Jaiswal had a dream start to his international career. He achieved multiple milestones with his 171-run marathon knock in the first Test. But now the bigger challenge for the young left-hander will be to back that innings up. He is not only looked at as a Test opener. India are hoping that he will develop into an all-format cricketer. In order to do that, the first thing he has to add to his game is consistency. 

The last time the West Indies beat India in a Test was way back in 2002. But of late, the difference between the two sides is at its peak. Veteran India keeper-batter Dinesh Karthik believes West Indies have the quality but they need to overcome the mental blockage while playing against India.

There may be a huge difference in quality between the two sides now but India and West Indies have a rich history. The proof? This Test match at the Queen's Park Oval will be the 100th Test match between India and the West Indies. And despite not winning a Test against for nearly two decades, the West Indies still enjoy a better head-to-head record. They have won 30 Tests against India, lost 23 and drawn 46. 

This will be Virat Kohli's 500th international match. He will become only the fourth Indian after Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Rahu Dravid to do so. Apart from them Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Sanath Jayasuriya, Ricky Ponting, Shahid Afridi and Jacques Kallis have also played more than 500 international matches for their respective teams.
