Chennai Super Kings will be banking on home advantage to seal their place in the summit clash when they take on a confident Mumbai Indians in the Qualifier 1 of the IPL on Tuesday.
After the gruelling league phase of the ongoing IPL, the stage is set for the play-offs with CSK and MI clashing against each other for a place in May 12 final. There is hardly anything to differentiate between the two sides as both CSK and MI have won the title three times earlier.
The MS Dhoni-led side has been patchy after a strong start and finished its league engagements with a six-wicket defeat to Kings XI Punjab at Mohali on Sunday. But CSK will be happy to return to their den to take on table-topper MI, probably its biggest IPL rival, to decide which team seals a spot in the final.
CSK boasts of a tremendous record at home this season, winning six of its seven games at the MA Chidambaram Stadium here and come Tuesday, it will act as a big advantage for the hosts.
A defeat, however, will provide both the teams a second chance in Qualifier 2 on May 10.
Here are the Top 5 Player Battles from the match between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings -
MS Dhoni vs Jasprit Bumrah
It will be one of the best finishers in world cricket going up against one of the best death bowlers in the world as MS Dhoni and Jasprit Bumrah face each other in Qualifier 1. Dhoni has been in good form for CSK and with Bumrah struggling to perform consistently, the veteran will certainly have the advantage in this battle. When it comes to their head-to-head record, Dhoni has scored 39 off 38 deliveries against Bumrah but the Mumbai Indians pacer has been successful in dismissing Dhoni three times.
Faf du Plessis vs Lasith Malinga
Faf has been one of the top performers for CSK this season and with 314 runs from 9 matches, a lot depends on the South Africa international in the Qualifier 1. He is in brilliant form right now with a 96 against Kings XI Punjab in the final match of the group stages but against a seasoned campaigner against Lasith Malinga, it is not going to be that easy to score runs for him. Malinga has dismissed Faf twice in IPL and against the Sri Lanka pacer, Faf has scored runs at a surprisingly slow strike rate of 64.00.
Rohit Sharma vs Dwayne Bravo
Rohit Sharma may have started his season slowly but with a couple of fifties towards the end of the group stages, he has regained his form at the perfect time. In a crucial game against Kolkata Knight Riders, he led the team by example and he will once again be the main man for MI in Qualifier 1. However, it will not be easy as he will be up against CSK all-rounder Dwayne Bravo who has dismissed him five times in the IPL and with CSK bowlers excelling in powerplays, it will be an interesting battle.
Quinton de Kock vs Deepak Chahar
With 492 runs from 14 matches, De Kock has impressed everyone with his batting at the top of the innings and as a result, the responsibility will fall on the shoulders of Deepak Chahar to dismiss him early. Chahar has bowled mostly in the powerplays and his tally of 16 wickets has been quite impressive. As a result, a lot will depend on how this battle goes as the two teams face off in Qualifier 1.
Suresh Raina vs Hardik Pandya
This will be a battle between a stalwart of IPL and a youngster who has impressed everyone with his all-round abilities. Raina is one of the top scorers in the history but considering the form that Pandya has been enjoying in the last couple of games, the Mumbai Indians cricketer will certainly have the upper hand. He has taken 14 wickets this season and he has also dismissed Raina twice in the IPL.
